Worried for TES:O.

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 11:47 pm

"Not taking risks" could mean many things. Is it that they're focusing a huge deal on it so as to make it distinct and different from the WoW-clone rut many other games are stuck in? Or does it mean that a WoW clone is the safest route?

At the moment, it sounds like all of combat is still in a pre-alpha stage that is indeterminate.

... This post was rather fitting for my sphere.

It won't be another WOW that's for sure. TES series is something that I am DEEPLY passionate about. I have , after all, been playing this series for HALF of my life, literally. It speaks volumes to me. It is the most believable game and by that I mean it is easy to immerse myself into this world because it has the richest lore,EVER! UNDISPUTABLE! That is why it cannot and will not be like WOW-a shriveled up husk of its once rich history. Yet in opposition to said statement, I also draw concerns with certain ways they will be setting up factions. Also I have NEVER known of any mmo that has any good stories. Mainly because stories are character driven and that is hard to do with one person, let alone, making it engrossing and believable for more than one. But if anyone can do it it'll definitely be these guys. On a more upbeat note though I'm looking forward to seeing the differences in the lands I have previously visited in old games; the island of vvardenfell in Morrowind, Cyrodiil, Hammerfell and High Rock. As well as finally getting a glimpse of my homelands, Valenwood. And of course dont forget the mysterious Summerset Isle home of the Aldmer. And lastly, The most mysterious of islands, other than the sunken Akavir, is the island S of Tamriel called Pyandonea. This is the one I've always wanted to see. Supposedly it is home to the Moarmer or Sea Elves, hence the -mer part which means elves of all kinds. they are one of the races never shown in any game thus far, in this series of course, that I know of. I know that Pyandonea probably won't be in TES:O though. just Tamriel. FOR NOW...

Its still early days (despite the dev time so far) and there are plenty of avenues this game can go along. It could be the best thing since sliced bread / it could be nothing more than burnt toast.

As has been said above: Read everything, make suggestions about what you would like to see in the game, formulate your own opinions but keep an open mind prior to release.

So far what Ive seen its not. TESO is probably outshadowed by Skyrim. Dont know really what Bethesda/Zenimax's plans are with this, are they really going to aim for big sub numbers, we dont even know budget. But 500k max sub thats if they do this like professionals.

People have to understand that fantasy MMORPGs have been around for a long time now and there isn't much left to do differently. Its all about gameplay now and polishing it if WoW didn't already do it.
You should apply for a job with Zenimax Online. Your views on the industry and creativity are right on par with theirs.

This is exactly the reason TESO is being met with so much negativity! The Elder Scrolls is such a unique series in terms of gameplay and player-driven experiences, that it has baffled people to see an online version of the game being turned into a WoW clone. Instead of dynamic first person combat we have the usual third-person hotbar approach with a few tweaks and additions thrown in. We know from the previews that it isn't even fast-paced dynamic combat with hit detection on par with TERA's, but something inbetween TERA and WoW/SWTOR.

Instead of allowing players to shape their own world, forge their own alliances based on political goals and ambitions, establish trade empires and aim for gold instead of glory, create cartography guilds focused on exploration, or whatever they would like to do... Zenimax has gone for a forced faction play style, just because it's what most MMO players are used to, and because one of their lead developers has great experience in that field. Neglecting to account for the fact that forced racial factions in Tamriel really doesn't make any sense at all, and stifles player-driven creativity and play-styles. It was painful watching the dedicated lore fans trying their absolute best to rationalize why the races were grouping together. We know well enough from Skyrim that Nords have a hard enough time working alongside other Nords, let alone with the Dunmer. And we're to believe that every Nord in Skyrim agrees to an alliance with the Dunmer, and vice versa? Shor's bones...

MMO's have indeed been around for a long time now. But there is a heck of a lot that can be done differently! When TESO was first announced gamer's minds raced at the thought of the game's potential, and the fresh mechanics this could bring to an over-saturated and stagnant genre. Negativity soon followed when the Game Informer article leaked and proved this was yet another WoW-like MMO. Nothing Zenimax Online have shown or announced since then has managed to change the popular opinion.

Cant believe they said gamers werent able to handle first person view in a MMO

So far I heard from them that housi8ng was impossible to do in a MMO, gamers cant handle first person view, and this was a third generation MMO

haha

See, this is where it just gets stupid. Everyone's allowed to be excited, to say the game has 'great potential' and 'sounds really interesting' - but the moment anyone sees it in action and says 'well actually, it looks a bit disappointing' they're being presumptuous and premature.

These journalists have seen it, and you haven't. Furthermore, it's the job of these people to attend demos and previews - they know what they're looking for. You think it could be a great game based off of very little; they think it might not be, based off of a fair bit more than you can claim. "90% are quick assumptions"? And you know this how, precisely - do you work for Zenimax, have you seen more demos of this game than the journalists, do you have exceptional credentials for judging these things? No, the truth is it's you who are making unfounded assumptions about a matter on which you know a lot less than the people you dismiss. You talk about polishing it and doing things that WoW hasn't done - well that includes a lot of potential things, and most journalists explicitly pointed out that TESO seems to do almost none of them.
I never said the game IS going to to be great, but like every game it does have the potential. The name itself sells. Look how good SWTOR did when it launched because of their name but it died off because of crappy gameplay. Not once did I gloat about how many videos and demo's I seen. I "read into details"..

Just as many seem to not understand that while yes you are free to criticize the rest of us are also free to tell you that your criticism is misplaced or based on ignorance. It goes both ways, you can't just say what ever you want and not expect others to challenge your views. its kind of the whole point of discussion forums. Everyone would be best served just trying to keep things civil and not try to play the victim role when others disagree.

wich is nothing im doing. im open to discuss my opinion on stuff. and i yet havent been uncivil in my expression of beliefs. But yess i get angry at ignorant people that just defend the game because they feel personally attacked. Or because said criticism does go against their own taste of things.
