Worst programming in the history of games!

Post » Sat Dec 04, 2010 3:53 pm

Dear Bethesda.
I have always been a huge fan of your games since the beginning of Elder Scrolls and Fallout.
The last fallout new vegas is a great game, story wise atleast. When it comes to programing, it is,
like a deathclaw, an abomination! Now, I really dont care if I get banned from this forum, or if this
Topic gets removed, I just need 1 admin to see it. Your staff in the programming department should
be fired and replased by apes, they would make less mistakes!! And I dont want to hear an excuse like
"It's a big game and big games has bugs." Look at Mass Effect 2. That Game is massive and had no bugs
on release. You guys cant even put out a patch that works properly. With this new patch, 1.2 or whatever
the companion buggs where zupposed to be fixed. They still arent!! What did I pay 60 of my hard earned
dollars for?? An abortion of a game that's what. Let me ask you this bethesda.
If I buy a brand new car, do I not want the engine to start when I turn the key? Same principal
here. Absolutely terible programming guys, just pure [censored]e. You have lost a ton of fans on this
disaster that you guys call a game. Newer will I ever again buy ANYTHING that sais Bethesda or
Obsidian on it. Chimps would make a better game folks.

Few things to bear in mind.

Bethesda only published. Obsidian made the game.

Though many bugs were fixed. The results may not be seen until you either start a new game or load a saved game from BEFORE the bug occured. If patches started screwing around with save games as they would need to do to bring companions back, then it'd just cause a hell of a lot of more problems.

Bugs would get fixed quicker if posts contained proper clear and consise bug reports (What you were doing, where you were, was it repeatable) instead of rants like these that clutter up the forums.

And finally, you must not play a lot of games as I've seen far, far worse efforts than New Vegas when it comes to bugs.

No. This one's the worst of all the games I've bought for the XBox360.

Listen, it's simple. I shouldn't have to pay $60 for a product, no matter what that product might be,
and have that product not work properly. You wouldn't buy a bag of trash that someone
puts a label on and calls art for $60 right? Same principle. This product is garbage! Plain and simple!

Worst programming? No, but Obsidian's programming division has it's problems. Every time they tinker with an engine, it takes up more resources, gets slower and buggier. This happens pretty much on every Obsidian game to date. But with the already fragile Gamebryo Engine "Bethesda Edition" and the pretty much non existent QA at Bethesda, I was sure this one will be pretty much unplayable at release. I encountered a few but then again anoyying bugs (missing companions, enemys spawn in enviorments) and design decision with F:NV (hidden walls in odd areas).

To compare it to the Mass Effect 2 is a little unfair though. First Fallout 3/New Vegas is a complex open world game. Mass Effect 2 is a brilliantly staged hallway shooter with very limited rpg mechanics. It's pretty much Gears of War with a dialogue wheel and a mini game (mining). This may be much simpler to test.

Don’t know if these numbers are real, but Bioware is a big company with ~800 people working on games. Obsidian is a small developer with ~150 people. Bethesda numbers varies between 350-1000 people.

I like pretty much like all Obsidian games, but none of them were love on the first sight kind of games (at least for me).

Unfortunately the worst enemy of FNV is F3. F3 had very anoying bugs at release but not to the extent of NV and they got quickly fixed. NV has game breaking time wasting bugs and the patches are doing little to address them.
In the future Betgesda should think twice before giving another game to Obsidian. Their work with the story was great, but when I jumped a fence, got stuck and the only way to get back to the game was fast-traveling it tottaly broke the immersion for me.

This patch added some worse bugs...even after restarting with a new character. I have been playing previously with complete unpatched version installed on hdd. I would soft reset cache every play session and I had relatively no problems. When the latest patch was released I decided to download it because it fixed features I didn't have, such as getting emergency ncr radio and legion assassin encounters. After downloading this new patch these features finally worked, but along with them came a glitch where my character stays in vats mode as he's decimated by enemies while just standing there. Just that ONE issue is enough for me to be pissed. I supported obsidian/bethesda on these forums because I previously had no real game breaking bugs when I played, but nonetheless quite a few annoying little ones and missing features. For this overlooked vats problem I will certainly not be buying any dlc, because you have to really svck not to see that glaring issue while testing, patching and repatching.

I never started any hate threads nor will I ever. I will simply not buy any dlc and I think those people that are equally angry should just do the same.

A few things to straighten out.

Obsidian made the game... with Bethesda's broken game engine. Bethesda should have just put their name on Van Burren, it would have been better.

Proper and clean posts have been made. Many of the bugs addressed there have not been fixed.

What games are you playing that have glitches that delete ALL of your progress? I've been gaming for over 20 years, and I can't think a game as big as this one that has this many bugs.

What's the point to go back work on a engine created in 2002 which wasn't even completed yet? They would throw the code away and start from scratch, or in case of Obsidian licence a current gameengine and modify them to their needs.

I would have loved to see that they go back to the birdview angel from the classic series though, would have pissed off all the "Fallout 3" aka Fallout Tactics 2 in 3D fans.

I still run into various bugs in ME2.. sound related issues, crashing, a bug during new game start that crashes the whole console.

Oh yeah, don't remind me. That game was a total mess. The Dev's even admitted that just before the release of Fable 3. I was not so much annoyed with the bugs in FONV, I expected them. It was the delay of the fix and lack of communication, not to mention the fact that guns and npc's movement is still bugged in my game, even after the patch.

Obsidian didn't make the engine though and most of the problems people are complaining about are stability, performance, and the engine with the various quest bugs afterwards. If you've used the geck tool on the PC, that's basically the extent of programming that Obsidian did. They more or less created a total conversion mod for Fallout 3 with Bethesda tweaking that dev tool to add things like factions which were actually kind of in there from Oblivion anyways.

You guys, seriously, have no idea how annoying it is to keep running into this statement over and over again from various new members...

I might lock and redirect, when there's already an open discussion going on about the same thing (I try to keep one "rant" thread open on each Issues forum.) I will lock a "rant" thread if it's just a bunch of [censored] bars. The only things we insta-ban for are admitting to/advocating piracy, being under the age limit, or being a spam bot, basically. For just about everything else, we allow 3 warning before we have to discuss banning (and even in that case, some leeway can be given.)

This is all explained in our Forum Rules, which can be found pinned to the top of every board on this forum.

/rant

Carry on...
