Worth playing the Might and Magic series?

The RPG Might and Magic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Might_and_Magic

Which is quite dated, with the latest one being 2002. How's the game like, though? Is it worth it to play? I've only played the tactical version (Heroes of Might and Magic), never played the RPG version.

Ubisoft released this "Dark Messiah of Might and Magic", which i've heard to be rather lackluster compared to the original series.

Im a bit of a graphics person; i like nice sceneries and such. Though unless the gameplay or plot is compelling i think i'll wither with the old graphics, hah:d Also, not sure if they'll even work on win 7.

I'd recommend M&M 6 and 7 in terms of game world, story and gameplay; but the graphics are eh.. not good.

Dark Messiah is just different. It's not a tile-based dungeon crawler. It's an FPS much like Dishonored (same developers) and you can play through it in several styles, either through hacking and slashing, stealth or magic. The melee combat system is among the best of any first person games (certainly a lot better than Elder Scrolls) and the level design is excellent. I would recommend this game.

That doesn't sound too bad then. Why exactly do I not hear much praise for the game? Is it just under appreciated? I've seen the game in bargain bins and I've had a faint curiosity for it for years

I've only heard of the series recently and I have to say Dark Messiah is on the top of my list for entries to try first.

Yeah, 6 is my favorite in the series. That said, I tried to replay the game not long ago and couldn't really get into it, the poor graphics annoyed me too much. Which is a bit strange, since there are several games with even worse graphics I have no problems replaying.

Yep, it's a great fantasy action game.

Although not the best reviewer, this guy really does love DM. He also has a somewhat interesting Lets Play on it.

One of my first memories of the game was picking the telekinesis spell once I leveled up, and tried it on a crow I had just killed. Threw the corpse right up in the air, and then it crashed on Leiana who died from the impact and gave me a game over... Ahh, physics.

Also finished my first playthrough on hardcoe difficulty mostly by abusing the kick feature, kicking enemies into fires and off ledges and such. There was one place which had a little kitchen in a corner, so I would simply lure all the nearby enemies into that room, then kick them into the stove which immediately sets them on fire and burns them to death.

My biggest issue with the game is Xana, the woman stuck in your head. She's the token intercom/guide character and has a really annoying, forced "sixy" personality. Always has something snarky to say about everything which just pisses me off. You can actually get rid of her if you wish, but that's very late in the game which sort of defeats the point...

Oh, you can do fun stuff like that? :D Cool.

Also I evidently forgot to search for video reviews

Hmm, its a "first person shooter with a heavy emphasis on rpg elements". I smell.....bioshock and metro 2033. Yum. I think im going to get dark messiah after all. Perhaps a bit more research. I must say the style really reminds me of TES Oblivion.
