Stop eating junkfoods and high fat/calorie/carb meals excessively. Stop indulging on sodas and junk drinks. Problem solved.

Old cure for gout: live on threepence a day, and earn it. Lose weight by working or working out or any form of exercise, not some bizarre diet that might stop your guts working right. Solid food is good. Soup is great, but really shouldn't fall under 'things you tell someone to take in moderation' ever. Diets and BS have been dancing partners since the day 'Rubenesque' stopped meaning highly desirable.

it wouldn't go ALL soup, but a mostly soup diet would probably make you healthier. although i don't imagine it would show that you were loosing fat for a while since the water weight of the soup would make it seem as though your not loosing weight. At least i am pretty sure that water weighs more than fat.

one of the better ways to loose weight though is to add some running into the mix. just run around your block or for 10 minutes every day, you'll get healthier real fast the more you run.

A problem a lot of people do with diets seem to be that they start to drink a lot less, so they lose weight that way, but that's not good. You need that body water to stay healthy. And avoid as much carb and sugar as possible.

I found walking to work extremely well for losing weight, walked about 40-50 minutes a day and then longer 3 hour walks once or twice a week. In two months I had lost a lot of my weight.

Cut carbs down to say 200g a day. Generally just eat relatively small portions of salads and chicken/fish/turkey throughout the day. Some brown bread too.

All white bread, white pasta, etc. should be avoided, no complex carbs.

And obviously no sugar. Fruits are good, but not graqes either.

Your main drinking liquids should be water and green tea.

And work out at least 3 times a week.

To answer your question, an all soup diet would help, yes, but its not healthy in the long run. And the moment you switch back to a regular diet, your weight will come back.

Sometimes we hit a wall with weight loss, just persevere through it.

Foods alone wont make you lose weight. And cutting out your current diet is a stupid idea as well. Your body has come to depend on much of what you intake, so you have to take them away gradually.

Your doctor wont tell you how to lose weight, because its different for everyone, and the general method is common sense. Cut the crap and exercise.

the no carb diet is actually a very bad thing. carbohydrates are part of the process of how the body burns fat, cutting them out of your diet will make it harder to burn calories with exercise.

i would recomend trying rice instead of salad. The reason being is that salad is not very good tasting by itself and makes it very tempting to put toppings like dressing, cheese, and meats which defeats the point of eating salad to loose weight. Rice may be flavourless by itself but its very easy to cook flavor into it. Rice is dirt cheap as well.

Whaaaaaat?! :P

I'm sorry, but no. Minimal to low to no carb diets definitely work. I do it before events all the time. Granted the fat comes right back when I start eating regular again, and that it isn't healthy to sustain for more than, say 40 days or so, but it certainly works. For a lot of people too, not just me.

I'm not saying he should completely exterminate all carbs from his diet, but definitely lower it. Your rice idea is good, so as long as he makes sure its brown rice.

As for the person who said you can't lose weight by diet alone, yeah... You can. :/ Again, I'm not saying he should do that, or take any of the extreme measures, just that you shouldn't claim things impossible when they most certainly aren't.

Again to the OP, just to make it perfectly clear: I do NOT condone a carb free diet, or a no exercise weight loss method. My advice was given in my post.

Yeah, I mentioned to my GP that I was thinking about this and she said that would be a bad idea. Though that may be due to me having diabetes.

I've tried a sort of informal soup diet before, not because I was trying to diet but just because I like soup, and did lose a modest amount of weight. It's probably a good way for people like me to eat vegetables, too, since I tend to be a bit of a veggie avoider much of the time.
