Would appreciate some help: Battlemage

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 1:33 pm

So I want to do one long playthrough (often 100+ hours easily) but am worried that I will be 'nerfed' at the end game LVL 45+

I am not a min/max person, nor do I have to one-shot, but I also don't like to die 10 times trying to find the one 'right' strategy.

I was planning to play:

Altmer

One-Hand
Block
Heavy Armor
Destruction (I realize the issues at endgame with destruction - I plan to only use lightning and more for 'effect' in roleplaying - Lightning Storm announcing my coming etc. plus some basic range attk)
Conjuration

I know I want to put 11 perks in One-Handed, 10 in Conjuration (I want to summon Atronachs), 10 in Destruction, I was then going to put 8 perks in Block and 9 in Heavy Armor.... (that is where I need the most help - see below)

Based on a level 50 build, I was going to put level up points: 25 into magicka, 15 into Health and 10 into Stamina - so that my end result is: Magic 400 Health 250 Stamina 200

Where I need help is: I am leaning more toward being a brutal fighter after some 'softening' with magic..... will my armor/block be sufficient after level 40-45+ or do I need to invest some in smithing/enchanting ..... In terms of my playstyle I don't like to enchant/smith and would be happy to never have to but I will if it prevents this character from being gimped.

I plan to play on Adept - I have nothing to prove to myself - I just want to have fun for 150 hours or so without being frustrated at the end.

Please, I would appreciate thoughts and help. Especially with what perks to get with Heavy Armor/Blocking (do I need perks?) or is it better to put into enchantment and smithing? And does my magic/health/stamina look ok?

Thank you.

You'd probably want to do some smithing/enchanting, I'd use just store bought potions so your default skill acts more like 60-70 skill, so you can upgrade your weapons/armor a decent amount.
This is purely towards the end though, you can go through 30 or so levels easily without bothering.
Edit
As far as perks go, you'd want heavy armor perks, but blocking perks are generally not needed if you're going to soften them a little before you engage.
One thing you should keep in mind for the stats is that carry weight goes up by half your stamina. Also, perked mages have default 50% off spells, and master level robes you can find/buy give an additional -40% off for one school.

Block is useless since your hands will be taken up with spells and weapons. One-handed, heavy armor, destruction, conjuration work fine. I personally switched out one-handed for enchanting so I can enchant and improve my own armor and putting a few in smithing for some higher armors. The reason I opted out one-handed is conjuration takes all of the attention off of your character and whatever enemies do end up going for you will just get burnt to a crisp with magick anyway. Not to mention you will have a follower AND your summon.

I actually want to melee - the magic is the secondary aspect. I sort of have an "Elric of Melnibone" thing in my head.

I don't understand how smithing/enchanting work - can I improve my armor/weapon just with skill points without any perks?

I was going to use block perks to avoid arrows and 50% energy from mages - so I could close with them after draining my magicka.

The point of my build (I hope) is to use my magicka, but then close immediately and be tough enough to fight with the mob - even after level 45+

The smithing perks allow you to craft higher level gear, and vastly improve said gear.
You can still upgrade gear with just the skill, hence why I suggested potions, as you can reach a decent level without much work or perks.

Okay - so I will be fine without Smithing perks overall? I just don't want to die in 1-2 hits endgame..... I guess I'm trying to create a 60% melee 40% magic or maybe even 75/25....

Anyone else?
