Hey guys, with The Hobbit in theaters today it really had me thinking, do you think an Elder Scrolls movie would be a good idea? Who should direct it? Who should be in it? One film or a franchise? Discuss!
I wrote about it http://elderscrollsotr.mymiddleearth.com/2012/12/14/elder-scrolls-skyrim-oblivion-morrowind-elder-scrolls-online-lord-of-the-rings-film-movie-peter-jackson/, but really wanted everyone else's opinion, thanks guys!
EDIT: I voted No. You can only make a movie from a fantasy world, when that world is from books. A video game made into a movie doesn't work. A book series made into a movie can be amazing (LOTR).
Maybe if TES had a larger book series, written by a better author, then they could make it.
I could do with a series of shorts addressing interesting events we're probably never going to see in-game (e.g. the Camoran Rebellion, the War of Righteousness, some of the lesser-known conflicts during Tiber's unification of Tamriel, etc.). But the target audience would be tiny, and I don't think the typical movie format would really work for TES.
No it wouldn't really work. While ES Lore is certainly deep and rich there really isn't one or even a main over-arcing storyline. Each game in the series has its own villains, its own themes. There never has been that ONE big bad evil thing, there has been as many as there has been games. So to me a ES movie would feel sort of generic.
Could very well work. There's enough content and interesting events you could make a good story of. Heck, you could make a movie out of the Infernal City / Lord of Souls. Although I'd prefer a different setting.
It could work, however they would need to hire a really good writing team, a top director, and then decide which part of the series they want to make the movie about. However having said that most likely a TES movie would fall flat on its face because hollywood is all about rehasing stories that have already proved they can be profitable, TES has no such proof except in the gaming business. So most likely the movie would not have a high enough budget to do anything but make a bad movie and tarnish the gaming series in that process.
No. Fun as the TES games are, and cool as their settings are, none of the stories that I've encountered are truly deep or complex enough to warrant a movie. IMO that's why movies based on video games svck - the plots are cartoonish at best, and driven more by scenery and special effects than anything else.
Silent Hill and Resident Evil were both video games made into movies. Although Resident Evil was probably the better of the two. I think with the right writer and producer, it could be a decent movie. But I don't think it would draw enough of a crowd to be a blockbuster. It would be cool if they did make a movie and it ended up a cult classic.
