from my experience its worth learning the ins and outs of the game your self. my best example of what can go wrong when you tell some one whose never played before what they need to do and walk them through it is when i my stepbrother wanted to play morrowind.
he saw me playing it for quite some time, but hated the graphics so never bothered, but eventually he became interested when he saw all the awesome content that was not graphics related and wanted to play. so he started a new game and i walked him through it, telling him where to go and how to get set up with a good character and inventory real early. after about a few hours he did not really get into. after a couple of days he started over and i let him figure it all out himself and he enjoyed it much better the second time around. i chalk it up to more sense of accomplishment, but people vary.
and i did buy the guide for obvilion, but mostly for the charts of sigil stones and what items there were and at what level they appeared.
