Xbox 360 Controllers?

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 3:12 am

Hey there. So a few days ago I was at Gamestop and asked for a hard-wired 360 controller to use with my PC. The store manager warned me "I've heard the newer controllers don't work well/at all with PCs, so be careful". This deterred me from buying one at the time. I have multiple games that I would prefer using a 360 controller with instead of M+K and after hearing of problems with Skyrim I think its even more important to get one now. Does anyone know if the newer models off the production line work with the PC?

They work fine, just be sure to download the latest software from Microsoft.

On this topic, is Skyrim an XInput game?

If you have no idea what XInput is please don't bother answering...

Hearing about the UI issues, I plan on getting a controller tonight. My question is this: are there two kinds of controllers? As in, is there a PC version and an Xbox version? Or do they all work USB?

The wired USB one I believe is PC specific.

The wireless one is agnostic, but you must have the wireless accessory adapter for the PC (just a little USB thing that allows you to connect XBox wireless peripherals to your PC).

Thats exactly what I'm asking PlayfulDreamer. I'm wary to buy a controller just to find out they don't work. Is there a specific kind I would need to get?

Also BelgarionNL, do Gamestops or Best Buys sell the wireless adapters for the PC?

There are no PC Xbox 360 controllers, both models are Xbox 360 controllers. That being said, they both work with PC. The wired controller is simply plug and play, whereas the wireless version will work if you get the wireless receiver attachment for PC.

I don't think you can buy them individually anymore.

whatever you do, buy the microsoft brand and not a madcatz or whatever. They are not recognized on Win7. I had a hell of a time trying to get it to work, it kept cutting out on me.

So then I guess I'll be getting a wired one? Or do you mean that I can buy a new controller+adapter together, but not separately.

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but it almost feels like this was the intended outcome. We know Microsoft was into Bethesda for the DLC situation, but what if they forced the team to push out a bad UI port so people would run out and buy their controllers? Think about all of the negative buzz associated with this issue, and the resultant positive buzz for those playing on the 360.

As it is, I'll pick a controller up tonight (praying the store has one) so I can avoid the disheartening headache that comes with the mouse and keyboard in Skyrim. Thanks for the info!

Its not a bad UI, its just some people have been having a problem with the mouse not working properly in menus. When it works, its really quite good. I hope it works for you when you do get the game.

I believe that's the case.

Anyone know whether Skyrim is XInput or not...?
