Xbox 360 HDD Install?

Post » Mon Jan 24, 2011 11:34 am

OK, so I'm getting F:NV on Friday when it comes out here in England and I was wondering whether installing it to my 120GB HDD before I first play the game will be worth the 20 minutes and help prevent any FPS problems and stuff like that?

Thanks guys!

I never play a game on the 360 unless I install it first. Unless I am just renting one to try it out.

You can always spend those 20 minutes reading the manual and doing controller warmups

I'm not sure about preventing FPS problems but it sure does make the Xbox 360 much quieter.

I don't know if it will make a difference. It will reduce fan noise, that much I do know. Just install it. It's not like it's going to make it play any worse lol.

Yes, I would definitely install it to your 360 hard drive judging from the amount of hours you'll be playing.

Hmmm, actually I was wondering how much space the game is going to take up on the hard drive. I want to install it so I can play without the console sounding like a jet engine revving up, but I've only got about 6 gigs free.

Better start uninstalling some games. On the PC, it takes up about 10GB uncompressed with the install. Can't imagine that would be much different on the 360.

Well, Oblivion was around 5gb to install, and that's without all of the DLC. You might be ok, but I would delete some unnecessary things just in case.

Alright then. I'll install it and spend the 20 minutes looking at the manual and strat. guide.

I've had my 360 for a very long time, and I'm ashamed to say I've never installed a game. The last time I even thought about it as an option I was told installing would do something to my save files for said game so I bailed. So yeah, massively ignorant question of the day: How do you install to HD?

6.8GB is the maximum that gets installed, and it probably wont even be that much. It doesn't install the entire game either.

Edit: @Aonaran If you go to the My Xbox part of the dashboard and highlight the tab that allows you to select "Play Game" and hit Y, it brings up the game options. You can choose to install the game there.

 First PC players complain about waiting for a release date of 3 days if not in North Amercia, then we have players in North America complaining they have to wait 3 hours if in EST, and now we have an xbox player complaining he can't wait 20 minutes to play a game.

What is becoming wrong with us players?

Edit- I just looked and fallout 3 with all the DLC and saves and stuff ia taking up 2.2GB of space on my hard drive, if I delete this do I lose my acheivments?

I'm not complaining. I've waited a long time for this game and I'm sure an extra 20 minutes will not harm me. I was merely curious as to whether or not installing helped in any way.

I don't see any complaining here. He asked if it was worth the 20 minute install time, and the consensus seems to be that it is. That's pretty much all there is to it.

I'd say choosing to install it was a good decision. I can't vouch for the games running any smoother, but I personally have noticed that after installing my 360 games to the HD the bugs become less common. And besides that it makes the 360 quieter and without the disc spinning I think it keeps the 360 cooler as well. Make sure to clear your System Cache too every once in a while when deleting/installing new games (Memory, "Y" for Device Options, then Clear Cache).

Aw, work just called asking me to come in. Well, I'm out..

Yeah I always install games to my 360 hard drive. It keeps the Xbox cooler, the fans don't have to run as much, and it's quieter. Plus it's also supposed to make the game run a little bit better.

No you will not lose the achievements. You only have the DLC and saves in there (the game install itself was ~6GB IIRC for FO3 on console). You would lose those, but they are tied to the account and can be downloaded again when you play FO3 again. Your achievements are tied to your Gamertag.

Alright, so it doesn't necessarily effect load times, it is just a good idea because it makes your xbox run smoother? I can live with that.

Ah thanks, think I'll delete that and oblivion then that should free up some space.

Well, I've cleared out my HDD, ridding it of the old demoes, etc. I never play anymore and I've cleared my cache. I'm ready and waiting for F:NV!!

True nobody was complaining, I was thinking about the PCers complaining in other posts. Sorry got mixed up a bit. You know when you make a post, then you have to wait a minute because they don't let you make back to back posts. So I forgot in that 1 minute of waiting. Sorry again the person I quoted wasn't complaining.

But it is funny though. What is next? The PS 3 person can't wait the 10 minutes or so it takes to install the game? LOL. Reading too many posts today about waitng for New Vegas. :foodndrink:
