Xbox 360 is making loud worrisome humminggrating sounds when

Post » Mon Jun 25, 2012 5:43 pm

Any suggestions? The discs seem fine and it does not seem to be affecting anything but it is a cause for my concern. I have the newer sleek and black 360 model if that helps. This community tends to be very helpful so i figured id ask here for some quick advice.

This is a somewhat rare occurence but the humming noise is very loud. Thanks!

The new model should be pretty quiet so if it's under warranty I'd get it replaced / repaired now.

Otherwise, install your games to the hard drive for a huge reduction in noise (I have the old Elite which is as loud as a freight train when a disc is spinning, so I install any game I play).

I install every game as well. It still makes the noise on at least two of my installed games. I got this model about 1 1/2 years ago so i think the warranty is void. The noise is rare but it is also worrisome. Maybe if i blew some pressurized air on it? Another thing, the noise is recent. It only started about a week or two ago.

Isn't the warranty 2 years? I'd definitely check that and get it taken care of ASAP because if it turns out to be something serious and it gets worse later you're going to pay more out of pocket.

Well it is worth checking but i think the warranty is a standard 1 year and they gave the option of the 2 year warranty for additional fees. I am pretty sure i didnt pay extra.

Since it happens just at startup I want to say that's pretty normal. I mean my (older) Xbox does it at start up, as does my Wii, so I think it's probably a normal sound that happens when the disc is first read. I can't say for sure, I don't have the slim system, but yeah all I can really say is check the warranty, and if that's bad then hope for the best.

Maybe try setting your Xbox in a different position (if you have it vertical, try horizontal... But please don't do this while a disc is spinning, you will ring it to death....)

If it is, for some reason, newer games play off the disc for a little while after it starts. (at least mine does, I have no ideal why.)

I still run the original 20 gig relic and it sounds like I'm on a Formula 1 track. Loudness isn't really an issue. It's the grating that worries me. If you're resting your 360 vertically, rest it horizontally instead. Don't risk letting it damage your discs, I'd say get it repaired.

Edit: Ninja'd. >_<

I have the basic knowledge of what to do and not to do when it comes to the console. To hopefully solve this lets assume that much. I switched positions already(without the disc) and the noise hadnt started back up yet. However the noise is rare and occurs at start up AND in the midst of play, not even at loading screens. Just regular play. It is also quite loud. Like a damned Boeing 747 taking off(exaggeration). If it was just the normal noise occuring more often it would not concern me that much. It is the magnitude of the noise that is worrisome.

Well you have two options. Get it repaired, or play it til it breaks. Maybe it'll last you until the 720 comes out.

Interesting. It is not the same noise though it is similar. There is a grating noise yet the discs seem fine. No scratches. It is also quite loud. As for the newer games? That i didnt know. The two games that have been doing this are Dragons Dogma and MW3. Both relatively new games. Less than 1 year old.

Ill try some older games and see how that goes down when i get home.
