Xbox players: how do you play archery?

Post » Mon Aug 20, 2012 12:43 pm

Why do you think they added the eagle eye and steady hand perks? Because Skyrim is an Xbox game first and foremost, and without those perks aiming with a gamepad is a nightmare. I've never used those perks on PC but when I played on my friend's Xbox I had to.
It was only a suggestion, I'm not saying that you shouldn't or wouldn't want to take all the perks in any tree. Just that early on you may want to use points somewhere else. The eagle eye and steadyhand are great perks for beginners though for sure! This playthrough I have not taken it yet, maybe I'm a little to soon for someone just starting. My apology if it sounded all wrong. Didn't mean for that.

When you get better at it, don't put all your hard earned perk points in the tree. I only used 7 in mine. My archery skill is at 100 and with my Daedric Flaming bow I can kill Mammoths with 2 shots. Took out a whole camp of Foresworn from a ridge using ancient nord arrows without being attacked once. Overdraw in the perk tree along with hunting perk and Ranger should be all you need. You'll get better for sure.
Try as TJByrum suggested and co-ordinate movements with a little left stick to help line'em up. I never touched the sensitivity of my controller.
Also try putting your arrow back in it's quiver from time to time as this helps with fine motor skills. Pick things up while aiming your arrow without firing said arrow and poisoning that arrow with a potion. All these things will help you get "Aquainted" with the controller.

Will do, thanks.

Lol, to each his own. I'm not a pc player, so I'd have a hard time with that at first. It really just takes some getting used to. I hope you get it soon! Reading my original post over, I came off kinda snarky or whatever, so I'm glad you didn't take it personal.

Haha no I didn't : )

Not sure if it's supposed to work this way, it seems like the RS has a "dead zone" in the initial movement and a big acceleration once you are half the way towards the end, I've opened a thread in the PC section for this.

By picking up a bow or crossbow and using it with either arrows or bolts. Then you hold the Right Trigger until it is fully drawn(or until you are aiming in the right place), and release it. Nothing special about it really.

I love the xbox controller. It's so comfortable. But if you really want to use a mouse and keyboard, I think there is a box you can buy that allows you to use a mouse and keyboard on an xbox. I forget the name of it though

Erm no, it's the other way around, I'm a PC user with an Xbox controller. A very stubborn PC user, actually. In due time I'll get the hang of it, I'm sure I will :toughninja:

PS3 player here, and I know what you mean. I've been playing with a controller so long I've taken it for granted of how hard it can be for people who've never used one before. I'm assuming you've used a mouse for aiming before, and while an anolog stick is more difficult to get used to, it can become just about as efficent.

It takes far more skill to use the controller then the mouse.

Pc controls are dumbed down with everything at the ready for you. I would suggest sticking with your keyboard and mouse and letting the Pro's use the controller.

Its for more advanced people.

Weird thing is, I fell I become more and more proficient with the left stick as I play along, but the right stick which is used for aiming has become my personal nightmare. Might be just a calibration problem, I'll see what the guys in the PC sections can come up with.

I think he's having trouble getting the reticule lined up with his opponent. He can't fine-aim it like he can with the delicate controls of a mouse. I understand his problem.

This. Even having being used to the Playstation controller (I've been using versions of it since the PS1), I'm completely unable to play first person shooters (or any games with similar aiming) on the console. Can't aim worth crap. Definitely need the accuracy of mouse+keyboard for those types of games.

(Which is kind of a shame - I've had to skip any number of supposedly interesting games because of it. Like the Killzones, the Resistance games, the Uncharteds..... ah, well.)

Pc controls are dumbed down with everything at the ready for you the correct tools for the job. I would suggest sticking with your keyboard and mouse and letting the Pro's poor svckers stuck using inaccurate thumbsticks use the controller.
