it's a super-compressed variant of WMA. i think the http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/directx/aa937781 has tools to let you decode and encode.

It's an instrument format: http://www.keytosound.com/
If you are a composer you can replace them by playing on your keyboard for example.

Nice to see the old mod(ule)s have a come-back. :)

Edit: No, it's not a module, see the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1262248-adding-your-own-music-to-the-game/.

Nope. Bloody frustrating, because unless Skyrim has support for MP3/OGG files as well it's going to make music/voice adding or editing an absolute pain.

More than likely you will need the XNA Developers kit. It's called Microsoft XNA Game Studio 4.0..

https://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=23714

Note: It took me a whiole to hunt it down because Microsoft changed the download link to point ot their Windows Phone 7 SDK :shakehead:

Anyone tried to add new songs ?

To add new songs (i.e. not replacing the old ones) you need to create a new "Media Set" with the song and add it to the "Media Location Controller" of each region where the sound should play.

So it's possible, but only with an ESP. Most likely you can do it using FOMM/Tesnip and the Fallout-3 Editor, if that doesn't work, we need to wait for the Creation Kit.

The http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=6812 contains xWMAEncoder.exe, which is a command-line utility you can use to convert between WAV files and XAudio 2/xWMA files (.xwm here). Should be located over at Program Files\Microsoft DirectX SDK\utilities\bin\x86, and takes input file and output file as parameters.
Documentation http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee415930.aspx. Godspeed.

Forum search is such a powerful tool, wouldn't miss it.
