I can't think of any valid reason for a person to go wander in the damn woods "just because"

It comes down to this. Some people like to be told a story. Other people like to tell their own stories. The people who like to tell their own stories will most likely want to free roam. The people who want someone else to tell them a story will most likely want to stick to quests.

Me, I'm a free roamer. I have a vivid imagination. As I said earlier, the stories, dialog, and quests I invent myself are deeper and more interesting than anything I have seen from a developer.

Which is the "spirit" of TES games. Unfortunately the new crop of gamers can't seem to play anything that doesn't spoon-feed them content. Blame MMOs.

I dunno. People love to make their own fun in MMOs, particularly on PvP servers. Punting somebody repeatedly off a gangplank in AoC, anyone? Didn't kill 'em, but it sure made 'em mad having to climb back up every time. ;)

I pick one quest then when I am done with that one I pick a miscellaneous quest and I go in that direction and just run around until I find something new and I go explore it until I reach my destination.

I roam from place to place, breaking in places, discovering things etc.

To me this is where the game really outshines the previous TES installments, in terms of quests and story I have to admit it's pretty bubblegum...but just roaming around seeing and doing random things is where the game comes into it's own.

Some days I pick a quest or two and do them, while roaming free in-between looking for dungeons/caves.

Other days I just roam around and look for dungeons/caves.

Sometimes a do part of one of the major quests and look for dungeons and caves.

See the theme there lol.

I like dungeon crawling - just finished one of the bigger ones - Bthardamz. Wow, so many areas/rooms and different levels.

Wandering around is what I like to do. Thus my most played character who has some 25 hours invested is only level 22.

I also spend unnatural amounts of time in towns.

I free roam until the overhead of undone quests gets to be too much.

Now that I've played through much of the game, roaming is much of what is left. I'm looking for a location I might have missed.

Free roam could be cool, but I can't think of any valid reason for a person to go wander in the damn woods "just because" (Free roam, right?) in the first place. I don't just wander aimlessly anywhere personally.

Er... Actually, i do sometimes `free roam` in real life. Ok, I can`t afford to just go to another country at a whim, but it isn`t hard to just take a car, train or coach somewhere new and then just walk about a bit. Don`t people get bored of where they live sometimes?

Nothing exciting ever happens though.

Skyrim`s more eventful.

Depends on my mood and/or how much time I've got at the moment. If I've only got an hour and just have to have my Skyrim fix, I'll jump in and follow a quick quest. Otherwise I like to just wander around.

Love freeroaming, but I still do the MQ and sidequest. I try to portion out the MQ so I don't finish them too quickly, though. I don't force my way into areas, unless it involves known enemies, so I don't break quests...

First playthrough (unless it impossible) I do a min/maxing 100% completion playthrough that avoids sidetracking to do all major quests and objectives pertaining to the main questlines (story, guilds, etc.) and achievements.

Afterwards I delete that file and go for a more immersing one where I wander and soak up the world.

And after a few months of playing a game, I go for ludicrous gameplay restrictions to make the most challenging experience to overcome.

The more I play roleplaying games the less interested I am in doing quests. I like to make my own adventures. The stories, dialog, and quests I invent myself are deeper and more interesting than anything I have seen from a developer.

Best post I've read here in ages. Agreed, totally.

I usually decide to head towards a place that's been marked on my map for a quest, but it tends to feel like free-roaming because I usually can't remember for the life of me what quest it's for. I'll also do good-old free-roaming and exploring.

You have obviously never played Everquest. Back when I played(back around Omens of War), Everquest was like TES on crack when it came to exploration. 7+ expansions of content, you had to download maps for areas, no quest markers or pointers. I loved that game.

I have to admit oblivion being my first TES i hated exploring IMO every dungeon place event was very similar too eachother, so I did every quest I could probably only 5-7 quests I never did. but in skyrim i did that and felt idk empty people were not memorable neither were the quests it started getting repetitive and not to mention the guild quest were pretty short, and on my most recent character I went to every dungeon, cave, fort anywhere I could I love it most places are unique and are actually longer or more interesting then most side-quests

I stopped free roaming other then to put places on the map when lots of quests started to get broken by me running into stuff before I actually "got the quest" to get it.

I don't have a quest journal, I have a huge bunch of things people have told me they would like me to do. Whether they do get done or not depends on some degree of morality, but mixed with a big dollop of whim and the roll of a die.
