Suppose for a second you are chosen to show a person who has never even heard of video games what video games are. You are chosen to select up to 25 video games to show them. What video games would you chose to show?
It would be best to show video games from each basic genre but it is not forbidden to do otherwise. For the purpose of this use these guidelines:
No more 25 games total
No more than two PC games
All consoles are allowed
Between 0-5 RPGs/mmorpgs
Between 0-5 FPSs/TPSs
Between 0-5 artistic style
Between 0-5 action/adventure
Between 0-5 puzzle/platform
Between 0-3 racing
Between 0-3 simulation
Between 0-3 sports
Between 0-3 strategy
Between 0-3 your choice
Have fun and feel free to explain your choices.
I am afraid I cannot comply with "two PC exclusives per category". I do almost all of my gaming on a PC, and I would not feel comfortable showing games I have not played.
I would start by defining a video game verbally, but I would use these games as my category placements:
Fallout, Pool of Radiance, & The Third Age for RPGs. Fallout 1 is the closest thing I even own to an old school RPG, and Pool of Radiance and The Third Age are present to showcase other styles of RPG.
Battlefield 1942, CoD 2, & Medal of Honor: Frontline for FPS. While I believe CoD belongs in it's own category, it is technically an FPS no matter how much I regret making that purchase. Medal of Honor, I believe, showcases the older style of FPS, where thinking was still kinda important. Battlefield shows what happens when you design a game for multiplayer, and why you should not do so.
Artistic style? Can I get a definition of this?
Fallout 3, Darkstar One, Prototype & STALKER: Call of Pripyat for AAV. I don't normally like Action/Adventure games, but these three show what the genre is.
I do not have puzzle/platform games. They have not seemed interesting to me.Neither have racing games.Ace Combat IV, Microsoft Flight simulator X, & Sub Command for simulation. Between them, I cover the very realistic and gritty simulator games, and the forgiving but incredibly hard ones.
Sports are with racing games for me.Rise of Nations, Defcon, & Shattered Union for strategy. These three showcase both the real-time and turn-based forms of strategy, as well as the fact that strategy games can have myriad differences in pacing. Defcon in particular emphasizes the large-scale thinking aspect of this genre, while Shattered Union showcases resource management.
Battlestations: Pacific, Empire at War, & Act of War for my choice. Battlestations: Pacfic is a game where you go from sea to sky to underwater to tactical map to any of the above while maintaining focus and the order of battle. Plus, it's really cool. Empire at War forces players to think not only in terms of what they can attack, but also about their economy and balancing their military in such a way that they can win the war with both space and planetary battles. Act of War is just a good thing to know.
