Do you have a broad taste in music?

Post » Mon Oct 08, 2012 3:09 am

I noticed that my best friend has a really small taste in music, mostly rock and punk. I thought this was odd. There certainly isn't a shortage of good punk/rock songs, but it just seems like I'd be fed up with them quickly if its all I listened to.

I myself like a whole spectrum of bands. From System of a Down to Owl City. The only kinds I can't stand are metal and new-pop (Justin Beiber, Kesha, Lady Gaga, etc)

Anyone else share the trait?
Also, any songs you listen to regularly or often repeat over and over? For me it'd be https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSvFpBOe8eY&feature=related by System of a Down and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IUjtHf76wM&feature=relmfu by Gorillaz

I wouldn't say my taste in music is "broad" but it's not very narrow either. I'm big into anything rock but I can listen to a little bit here and there from most genres really. However, when it comes to the genre in which you so eloquently described as new-pop, I can only handle a very little amount of it before I feel like I want to start punching babies.

Most people will describe themselves as having a broad taste, but (for example) listen only to a bunch of rock and indie bands. And they have this one popular hiphop song they like. I assume this thread will be no different.

Ah, here's the first. I can safely say that you do not like most genres.

I would listen to anything over Nickelback if that counts for something.

I've been obsessing over http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKi9Z-f6qX4 by Deadmau5 and now I want to delve into whatever genre it is, but have no idea where to start  This is a new world for me

I like most genres, no lie. Except country, English hippity hop, whatever the crap they sing on American Idol is, emo, and most metal with vocals.

I don't go out of my way to listen to many genres but I wouldn't mind if I had to listen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1evxMA7yYw sometime.

My taste is semi broad, I like everything except: Rap, Country and Opera music. There a couple of songs I like from each of these genres, but in general I don't like this type of music.

I think most people have a "broad taste" in music, in the sense that they'll tolerate or moderately enjoy most styles of music. I also suspect that this is what's going on with most people who claim to have a "broad taste" in music---like Waspinator said, they probably only own records from a fairly narrow range of genres, but because they tolerate a wide range of music they inflate their self-conception of being a cosmopolitan and open-minded listener.

It's one thing to have a good knowledge of a broad range of styles, and choose to listen to a wide range of styles. It's quite another to merely tolerate a wide range of music when it's played in your presence.

Rap isn't bad when the content is good. When its all about money, hoes, and blwjobs; I can't stand it.
I was raised around country music, so I occasionally listen to it. I don't really care for the new-ish kind of country music like tailor swift (if thats what you call it, my local radio station does)
Opera I never really considered recreational music. I always thought of it as performance art like classical rather than something you put on your ipod.

I think I have a broad range, but I may be wrong.
I think "broad taste" means that you actively like that kind of music, rather than just accepting its there.

I like all types of music - except for the types I don't like.

No, butsrsly. I'll listen to just about everything if I think the song is genuinely pleasant. So, yes, even country and rap/hippity-hoppity.

It does, Vernon, my brother (give me the strength to side with Iorveth in my fifth playthrough just to know what it's like).

Genres I've been actively looking for: black/thrash/doom/viking/folk/death metal and some possible fusions, martial industrial, ritual dark ambient/ambient noise, folk, psychedelic & post-rock, crust, oi, Romantic music (as in Grieg, Strauss and later Wagner for instance).

I suppose I have quite a narrow range of taste in music. So I'll just list all the genres/subgenres I prefer.

Spoiler

Metalcore
Heavy Metal
hardcoe
Post-hardcoe
Progressive Metal
Djent Metal
Deathcore
90s Rock
Call me a metalhead. At least I don't listen to Nu-metal, thrash or black metal.

I have a broad taste. Without that obligatory "except for Rap and Country" that everybody has to add. I love Hip Hop, "Indie" (whatever that actually means), Trip Hop, Folk, Various forms of Electronic Music, Metal, Blues, and plenty more.

I actually do enjoy most genres *that I've heard of*. This is partly because I have synesthesia and partly because I appreciate the meanings and work behind music.

Not really, just death metal and jazz. Otherwise, there's exceptions.

I mostly listen to metal, 90s hip-hop, some classical music and a tiny bit of jazz. Like with all things, most music from any genre svcks. Rather than a narrow taste though, I like to say that I have a very specifically defined taste. :P

Most people with an active interest in music probably broaden their tastes naturally over time.

My taste in music is pretty varied. On my ipod, I have Deadmau5, Serge Gainsbourg, some South African mbaqanga jive, some Japanese technopop (Perfume and Capsule), some Opera (Bizet and Mozart), Xotox, Jann Tiersen, Crowded House, Reggie Watts and Ratatat.
