Do you like dwarves?

Post » Thu Jun 28, 2012 12:54 am

Dwarves as in the stereotypical stout, underground, hardy folk. ie: Dragon age, D&D, Warcraft, etc.

They're constantly my favorite race out of any of them. I don't know why exactly.

Out of the "regular" fantasy tri-fecta (Humans, elves, and dwarves) it seems to go like this from what I see

Elf>Human>>>>>Dwarf.

So, whats your opinion on them?

I really like Dwarves. Because they are rough and dirty but great craftsmen.

Unlike the pretty, pretty elves.

I love dwarves in fantasy. They never got any good coverage in my experiences until I played Dragon Age Origins and I loved it. Orzammar is my favorite part of the game. Alas, if only there were games centered around dwarves... Dont ask me why I like them so much, cause I couldn't tell you.

Yeah I like Dwarves, but I like most of the races of modern fantasy really. Dwarves always tend to be the hearty rush into battle types though and some people don't like that stereotype, I do though.

Dwarf Fortress...

Gotta love a dwarf that wears legendary dwarf leggings crafted from dwarf skin with engraves with pictures of dwarves surrounding a dwarf.

No, I don't like dwarves. They're always shedding their beard-hair all over my sofa.

I like dwarves a lot (enough that I have dwarf race mods installed for both Morrowind & Oblivion)

I can understand people liking dwarves as they are rough, strong, and clever. I honestly prefer elves because I find them to be fast, smart, and well refined. Their reclusive nature reminds me of myself. I also just love their look. I think it is awesome. Pale skin, thin, pointed ears, and long limbs well suited for climbing.

Between Elves, Dwarves, and Humans, Dwarves take the trophy, followed by Elves. Humans are just so boring by comparison. Though the life-span of most fantasy elves would probably svck.

Humans svck because they are real. Yeah Dwarves are real but they're not considered a race. Humans......

Indifferent to them. However, their presence (along with elves') is usually the sign of a trite and banol fantasy world, so I always go on the alert when they appear.

Nope. They're short. Gnomes I really dislike though, because not only are they short, they're also scrawny. At least dwarves are meaty.

Out of the three, I can't really say I prefer any of them. I think I'll use DnD for my reasons. Humans are usually either idiots or bores, except for the unusual - Artemis Entreri, for example. Elves are usually too cautious or not masculine enough - once again, except for the unusual, like Drizzt Do'Urdern. Dwarves are usually too crude or stupid for my tastes - except for Bruenor Battlehammer.

However! Out of the three, I like Dwarves the best, generally. They have a very nice "Viking" culture, most of the time, and place high importance on reliable craftsmanship, eating food, and killing orcs. And barring a few social misfits, Dwarves are straight to the point - they don't give a damn about peace treaties, preserving things, or any conflict-reducing crap like that.

For example, your average fantasy Human would hide behind the sturdy town gates upon hearing of an oncoming threat. Your average fantasy Elf would either do nothing, try to placate the threat, or shoot flimsy arrows at it from far away.

Your average fantasy Dwarf, however, would put on a suit of armor covered in spikes and jagged edges, quaff a mug of ale, and teach that threat the meaning of pain!

Edit: To continue my +10 wall of text, and to clarify a bit, I like Dwarves as a race/culture, but I don't really care for their stand-out individuals, if you will. For the stand-outs, my stance usually goes Human, then Elf, then Dwarf. Race-wise, it's Dwarf, then Elf, then Human.

Man, being up late makes a fellow wordy.

But there are no dwarf women. Dwarves just spring out of holes in the ground!
