Do you like female singers?

Post » Sat Sep 29, 2012 9:53 pm

I was having a discussion with my friend, and he doesn't like female singers. At all, he says that they sound to whiney and are to feminine, no matter what their singing about. I regularly have music playing around my place, and he can't stand it whenever one comes up.

Paramore and Evanescence are a couple of my favorite bands.
I'm a rather masculine man (physically atleast, I've been described as a "[censored] carebear" on occasion) and he thinks its odd that I name these bands among my favorites.

I can't stand country music and it's ilk, but if it has a catchy beat and good instrumentals I'll probably like it.

Whats your opinion?

Your friend hasn't listened to enough variety. Play him some Patti Smith or PJ Harvey and see if he thinks they sound whiney.

What's wrong with liking female singers? Especially for being "too feminine"...? I'd say not liking female singers at all is a bit strange. Many of my favourite singers are women, whether it's Liz Frazer, Laetitia Sadier or numerous others that are regularly on my play list; I thought even Hawkwind's female-fronted period was quite interesting. Of course no female vocalist is a patch on Lemmy, but that goes without saying.

I'm opposite. I haven't liked most male singers for the passed decade or so, just because they haven't been doing anything interesting with their music. Lately that's been changing, though, which is a good thing.

I like both genders singing.

Paramore and Evanescence are a couple of my favorite fans.

Are you a rockstar?

Woops, had fans on the brain. Two of the fans on my radiator died on my H60. So I've been searching my apartment for replacements (I know they're here somewhere  )

Fans/Bands, simply a Freudian slip... with text...

Me neither, thats why I don't like metal.

Not the same thing, IMO. But I'd guess my friend would agree with you. He describes female singers as "crying, but with instruments behind it"

That whole "too feminine," argument isn't a real excuse. It's like saying dogs are "too hairy." And female singers are whiny? Tell him to listen to Joan Jett or Pat Benetar. Might change his mind.

Edit: And yes, I do like female singers.

I like singers of both genders, it depends on the individual's voice.
Also, "too feminine" made me laugh.

Nightwish fronted by Tarja Turunen were pretty bloody good back in the day,she was a full lyric soprano which suited Nightwish..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0O8e2hMAL6c .It's a shame when it went pear shaped they replaced her with a generic hack.

Who can blame someone for not liking female singers? Lady Gaga she-who-shall-not-be-named is enough to put you off of them forever.

Nothing wrong with female singers. Anna Murphy from Eluveitie is awesome.

Me neither, thats why I don't like metal.

Yeah well, metal isn't only about wailing, ya know?

Ever listen to Paramore?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ei8hPkyJ0bU one of my favorites.

Its more about being open to the idea and "to manly" for "chick songs" (as my friend would put it)

Me neither, thats why I don't like the illegible sounds from super-smoker quality vocals

Fixed it.

Well, this had been elucidating. There are still people who think in terms of "X is male" and "Y is female". Who knew.

I really see no need to question whether a singer is female or male
If they sound good I'm not going to care.

Also I'd be careful. I can see this thread easily going wrong.
