VGChartz is pretty reliable for numbers afaik. Here goes:

As of 27th Oct, 2012 Skyrim sales (in units sold):

19% without Steam is pretty solid imo.

Even if I was remotely interested in showing stats I wouldn't care. I'm not trying to prove anything. I believe our game director and VP of Public Relations. That's good enough for me.

 Wait... there are people out there BELIEVING Todd Howard?

Thank you very much. 19 percent without Steam is really good, given how popular Steam is.

There's no way Beth's top two figure heads claim those numbers and potentially alienate an entire user base of theirs (PC) without it being fairly legitimate. Especially with one of them being the VP of Public Relations. Thatthe would just be bizarre.
Yes its an bit bizarre, on the other hand people over anolyze everything being said, most thing said outside of written speeches are not well tough off.
Has seen values from 14% to 20% sales to pc, now as steam does not publish their sale numbers we only have the number sold in stores as solid numbers. However Skyrim still hold the record of most players at once on steam, much higher numbers than other popular games like Modern Warfare 3.

I think the problem is, there's only so much they can do with first-person on consoles. Do they keep releasing games with average at best first-person combat and clunky third-person as an afterthought? Or do they take third-person which is more naturally suited to consoles, improve it, and gradually make it the focus of the series?

It's unfortunate for first-person players like myself, but the latter makes the most sense given that console gamers make up a huge chunk of their fanbase.
More a question on how the controls work, Mount & Blade is an pure PC game, at least it was then I played I preferred playing it in 3rd person outside of sniping as the 3rd person viewpoint was good and the control was just as well in first and 3rd person.
Think first person is better for shooting as you are closer to the target, 3rd person in better for close combat as you get an better overview.

3rd person in Morrowind was pretty useless, a bit better in Oblivion but as the crosschair was in the middle of your head any form for ranged combat even picking up stuff on the ground was pretty hopeless.
Usable in Fallout 3, better in Skyrim so I have started using it, perhaps in TES 7 it become better than first person.

I don't like forced 3Rd person view either, that's the reason I don't use the horses. I'd also like the kill cams to always stay in 1St person as long as you play in 1St person.

I think melee combat is great in first-person in Mount & Blade. I much prefer it to third-person, where I tend to focus more on my character moving around awkwardly than I do on my targets.

The only thing that took a little getting used to for me was mounted combat in first-person. It seemed awkward to begin with, but now I prefer it to third-person also... so for me, Mount & Blade is very much a first-person experience.

It's a pity consoles prevent TES from having such a great combat system.

And then there's the over 5 million people playing Skyrim on Steam at the same time, so it's in the same ballpark as the console sales.

On topic, no. A Bethesda person mentioned that doing... vampire lord(?) first person proved too diffcult. So no they won't do it, not for Skyrim atleast.

Well, guess I know which side I'll be taking in Dawnguard. Not even gonna bother trying the vampire lord.

Don't think so. There wasnt any 1st person horseback in oblivion either. And i dunno, most people seem to like 3rd person perspectives, maybe thats the reason <_< I prefer 1st person though

There was first-person horseback in Oblivion, and there was first-person werewolf in Bloodmoon. Maybe it's the new engine that make first-person more difficult for certain things? I don't know. I just know that I won't use any features that force me into third-person. IMO, Elder Scrolls games are not meant to be played in third-person. But thats just me.

For some reason 3rd person archery works much better in Mount & Blade than in Skyrim, probably work nice in Tes 6 or Fallout 4 as it work better and better since Morrowind.

Think part of the problem in Skyrim is the fixed first person camera, unlike oblivion I understand its hard to change dynamically in the game, you jump on an horse and the camera goes up 50 cm.
The major problem with third person archery in Skyrim is the fact that there is no real reticle for you to use for aiming. You're forced to estimate approximately where to aim, and more often than not, you'll miss your target completely. In the first person, the reticle on the screen is pretty accurate to where the arrow or bolt will end up.

This problem makes horseback archery anything but useful, since it's nearly impossible to actually hit anything due to the camera and lack of guidance as to where the projectiles will hit. Some people may have figured out how to be effective with archery on horseback, but I think most probably find it too frustrating as-is.

I think i've read somewhere that tes games are primarily developed for first person view. At first I played in third person but when I tried the first person view I just fell in love with it. It made the experience more immersive. I still ride horses because I just love exploring skyrim on it. But I hope we'll have first person view in an update or dlc.
