Do you think making an ice mage would be viable?

Post » Wed Jun 13, 2012 11:13 pm

With that i mean, a mage only using ice spells. (in the destruction school atleast, alteration and restoration can always come to handy.)
I quess it would be possible, but i will have a rough time at the beginning.

Definately. You'll run up against an opponent once in a great while that will be immune to ice spells so have something in your back pocket for that. Bite the bullet at a low level and buy the firebolt spell, then take the fire perk that causes 25% more damage. Once you have those two, then take all the ice perks you want and you'll be set.

It's possible, but the game is set up for characters to be diversified and have different skills for different enemies and situations, so specializing on only one specific approach makes things difficult.

You don't need other elemental magic, though. You need enchanting, most likely, and possibly alchemy (if you want to help yourself and boost the ice effects of spells). You can also use another area for support such as sneaking and/or archery, or one-handed if you prefer melee (I don't, though).

Have fun with trolls! Maybe contracting Vampirism would be handy for an Ice Mage? It seems to work well with it. Plus, you can use that drain spell on enemies that resist ice, and it wouldn't be cheating, since the spell isn't associated with any element.

I can focus on ice spells the most. But i could use fire magic as a backup and put perks into that to.
And a high enchanting skill is a good idea.
Conjuration to maybe? (frost Atronach, bound weapons and soul trap for enchanting)
What race should do? Altmer?

And for those darn Trolls i will get backup from a strong melee companion.

If only i could get my hands on chillrend with this character without being a thief... >:C
Chillrend has a cold glow, would fit the character perfectly.

My Volkihar, Death Knight, and Necromancer specialize in Frost spells and it really makes the game difficult with all the damn nords around

I was worried about that, maybe i should just let the character specialize on all destruction magic. But give him/her a ''cold'' appearance like a pale skin and white hair. And then ice magic would just be the main spells the character will use, yet he/she does know as much about fire and shock magic.

That would be best advised. Everything in skyrim is resistant to cold. Ice Wraiths, Frost Trolls, Falmer, Ice Wolves, Snow Bears, Nords, Draugr, Wisp Mothers, Dwemer Automatons, Necromancers, Mammoths, and of course Frost Dragons

It's possible to (spam)jump your way into the house to get Chillrend, there should be a way to do so on youtube but it has a tendency to break the Thieves Guild Questline.

You could be an ice mage and still use ice enchanted weapons, like a bow for long range damage, to knock down their health quite a bit before they get to you. Also, frost atronauch packs a pretty heavy punch even though he also deals ice damage.

This.

My Necromancer uses ice magic as a backup when corpses are in short supply and to get that first kill before raising a thrall. At low-medium levels she got smacked around something awful by most of the above list.

Yeah, I had an Ice mage too, who used a frost atronach too. However you should have a spell in case you find an opponent who has frost immunity. So putting perks in one of the other destruction schools just in case aint a bad idea.

Other than that, ice mage is fully viable.

Thunder magic would do good then? When i slow them down with ice magic, hitting a full thunder could kill them.

well my firecharacter works good(no pure mage though. i have a fire enchant on my sword and use the flame spell in the other hand. kicks ass by the way), but frost can be difficult. nords have 50% resistace to frost.

I will use other magic in the beginning, and start using ice magic more after i get high enchanting to make the ideal ice mage robes, that way i can make frost magic that strong that it would be a pain to nords to. If not....well i will use conjuration and thunder magic to.

iv done a frosty mage before, it is hard but you do not have to use any other elements (but you do need to use other schools from time-to-time or you will get obliterated)

Relying on destruction alone, no I don't think so. No skill in the game(maybe except enchanting) is able* to carry the character alone. In combination with a couple of other skills? Yeah, I should think so. Frost magic slows down enemies making it very effective against warriors and mages alike as they will have trouble running away/to you.

Edit:

Ya just be sure to have a summon/sword something for those that are immune to it. Maybe even have a heal other spell and heal your companion when fighting one that's immune to frost spells.
