Do you want this game to have Lovecraftian Themes?

Post » Tue May 07, 2013 3:53 am

So the last survival horror game Bethesda published was "Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of The Earth" an excellent game in its own right. It was based on H.P Lovecrafts short story "Shadow over Insmouth".

So I was wondering do you think the Evil Within will have Lovecraftian themes, like madness, and extreme Cynicism, and the overwhelming feeling of helplessness. Lovecraftian.

...
You dont know who Lovecraft is? He's perhaps one of the most famous horror authors of all time, and pioneered the "Cosmic Horror" genre.

you kidding ?!, I would love to.

Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of The Earth is one hell of a game, an awesome game, I want it actually re-released in HD for PS3/X360 and PC, I was saddened when I knew that there were plans for 2 sequels and they never went through, the trailer for the 2nd one looked amazing.

I thought this was a standard horror set of rules?
Anywho no, I prefer what has been shown and this doesn't seem to be the aim.

Edit: I'm in no way saying I don't like that, I'm just saying I'm happy with what they chose for this game

It is standard, mostly because Lovecraft is to horror what Tolkien is to fantasy. Most authors (including for films, games, etc.) are either directly or indirectly aping them, and the few that aren't are purposefully working in the negative space those works created.

And agreed. The trailer didn't look Lovecraftian at all, and I'm a bit leery of crossing thematic streams. It's usually a bad thing.

It isn't really matters what source of inspiration they are using, what's more important is how they'll implement it and put together with awesome result.

I love the cthulhu mythos so it would be nice to have a game with that type of content.
BUT it has to be seen how it end up in the game and basically what kind of game will this be.
There are plenty of games based on HPL cthulhu, yeah, DCoTH is a good one, but IMHO in regards to and action shooter it wouldn't add a big plus.

I know there's a lot of Lovecraftian influences in horror games, but is that also the case for Japanese horror games?

I love Lovecraft and the Cthulhu mythos so well that I hope there is a ton of lovecraftian themes and influences in this game.

Not really, while I love lovecraft and his writing as person who popularize cosmic horror, I would prefer if creators to do something diffrent , and to be fair lovecraft doesn't translate that well in to games, as well as movies and many people already think that in order to replicate lovecraft you just need to give your monsters tentacles, and fish motive.

Personally I would love if they go with more of a early silent hill aproach
