Do you wish you were born in a different era?

Everybody in America says "stove." Words like "cooker" are British stuff.

What is a cooker? Is it a stove-top? An oven? A barbecue? A grill? A kettle? All these things cook.

A cooker is what us... civilized folk make our servants cook upon.

But you just admitted to not calling it a cooker.

A cooker sounds like what a child would call a stove. Or anything else that cooks. American English and British English both have really silly words to call things by. We need to come together upon a unified version with non-silly words only.

I would think they do, considering they spend all their time making meals for "civilized" folk with their cookers.

Hell no. Right now I'm in pretty much the best time and also in one of the best places in the world to have a good chance at a happy and comfortable life. I wouldn't easily be tempted to trade it for anything.
Yeah, the best time to be brainwashed by the propaganda machine. I would gladly trade this time period for early 18th century France under the Ancien Regime

Only uncivilized people call themselves civilized.
As opposed to people who've grown up in the same location for thousands of years, but still don't know how to adapt to their yearly typhoon seasons, producing thousands of deaths per year.

Alternate suggestion; unified version with ALL silly words.

Happy to be alive now due to the easy access to information about things, and relative freedom of communication. Lots of powerful people are less happy about this. Storm's a'brewing.

Would love to see what the future looks like, but wouldn't want to commit to moving there just yet.

I always say 'hob' for a 'cooker'... Brit living in Denmark. 'Stove' is a hob on top of a metal thing that burns wood. 'Cooker' reminds me of the Bill Bailey sketch about police language: 'he's got a shooter!' 'he's got a stabber!'

It's a thing that cooks. What's so odd about that? Specifically in reference to the kitchen contraption that includes hobs, oven and grill (what Americans refer to as a broiler, I believe); personally, a stove brings to mind an older solid-fuel thing like an Aga, but that's probably just me.

Americans do not call grills "broilers."

Also, if someone would please tell me what a "hob" is, I would very much appreciate it. :P

I was just giving you guys a hard time. Hopefully by now everyone knows I'm rarely serious. Here, a hobs is a "stovetop" (we're so straightforward and boring) and a broiler is the top heating element inside the oven. A grill is the rack that meat is placed on to sear or BBQ it.

There are too many choices! I would have liked to live in mid-19th century England or maybe the U.S. during the Cold War. Or maybe in the Wild West.
Or maybe I just like the 21st century too much. I like the technology and I like the entertainment and there's just so many places to go. I think I'm just gonna wait until someone invents a functional TARDIS.

I was imagining it really did sound that odd! It sounds like you guys do refer to what we call a grill as a broiler then, pretty much. Stovetop still makes me think of one of those "always on" Aga-type things: that idea seems to be quite firmly entrenched for some reason...

I wouldn't mind being a white middle class protestant in 50s USA.

I wouldn't want to live in any pre-modern place, no matter how high my social status be.
The future also sounds something I perhaps don't want to live in. Too much death coming up in a few decades.

Honestly, I wish I was born in about a million years. As a part of whatever the hell we have evolved into at that point. However as soon as I reach the age that is the equivalent of our 16ish. I would want all my memories to coke rushing back into me. Is that an option? Might be cool. The only being with the memory of two separate lifeforms...

I'm perfectly happy to live in this time. There is plenty of ignorance around today, but generally there is less than there used to be. I was born just in time to grow up with digital technology but just late enough to not take it for granted (I'm not saying younger generations always do but its more likely). People say they would have liked to have lived through certain events but we'll always have those huge events in our lifetimes. There is also the worry that our future isn't going to be too rosy but we'll find a way to overcome whatever challenges we face. Nearly every era had people worried about the future in some way, our time is no different.

Here, the rack and the heating element would be called the grill.
