Your dream gaming rig & should I upgrade mine?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 12:30 pm

OK, first, if money were no object what would your dream rig be?

And second, below are my current specs. I'm thinking it might be time for at least a new MOBO, CPU, RAM & Sound card. I think my case, power supply & GPU might be ok for now, but I want to know what you think. And please make suggestions for the hardware if you will.

Current specs from PC Wizard:

Mainboard : EVGA nForce 750i SLI
Chipset : nVidia nForce 750i SLI SPP
Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 @ 3166MHz
Physical Memory : 8192MB (4 x 2048 DDR2-SDRAM )
Video Card : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470
Hard Disk : Western Digital WD15 00HLFS-01G6U SCSI Disk Device (150GB)
Hard Disk : Western Digital WD75 01AALS-00J7B SCSI Disk Device (750GB)
DVD-Rom Drive : ASUS DRW-20B1LT
Monitor Type : Acer G24 - 24 inches
Network Card : NVIDIA nForce 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet
Operating System : Windows ™ Vista Home Basic Home Edition 6.00.6001 Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
Sound Card: Creative Soundblaster (very old card)

Also, if you're wondering how the hell I have that particular GPU with this old of a build, I built this with a GTX 275 but it died on me so I had to replace it.

I think you look fine for a while yet. A quad core would be ideal (for games like the Battlefield series), but most games are still console ports and a 3.2GHz E8500 should be enough for the time being.

As for my dream build, nothing too crazy. I'd focus on a nice display and sound card.

Intel Core i7 2600K
EVGA GTX 580
8GB DDR3
ASUS Xonar Essence STX
Dell U2711

Although, if I were doing this build I'd probably wait for the next generation of GPUs. I don't care for multi-GPU setups and I'd like to get a bit more performance than the 580 offers at 2560x1440+.

My dream rig only costs 700 bucks, and I'm on it right now.

Any thoughts on this combo:

MOBO & CPU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.738905

SSD for caching (SRT)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148442

RAM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233218

Cooling
I need to do some more research to double check the size of that RAM so I know everything will fit.

Sound
Undecided, mostly because I just picked up the Steinberg CI 2 interface and Cubase AI 5 and I want to be sure to get something compatible with that as I will be using it for recording voice files and sound effects for my mods. I've asked for some help on the Cubase forums so will defer to the guru's there with what I need.

Anyway, how does that look?

My dream rig is going to be on my desk this Christmas.
My relatives are pooling together money to get me a great gaming laptop ( I feel so loved  ), I don't know the full specs, but I did see the shipping papers and noticed a nice NVIDIA Geforce (big number) video card on it. Has a quad core (I think..) and 8GB RAM. That's all I could remember, I may post the full specs here if the thread is still alive.

@waymer13

you might want to consider additional cooling/fans as Gaming laptops can run pretty hot & it may not have a long unplugged runtime

Bleh

I know, I wanted an actual computer, but the thing cost a thousand bucks with a five hundred dollar discount. The added expense of a monitor/ external speakers/ keyboard and mouse would be too much. :sadvaultboy:

:brokencomputer: We only wish!

Here's the final verdict:

MOBO & CPU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.738905

SDD for System and Skyrim! :hubbahubba:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233220

16 GIG RAM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231416

Cooling
CORSAIR H80 (CWCH80) High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181016

I'll use my Caviar Black for storage, and I have several large capacity external drives for my OCD backing up obsession.

The Steinberg CI 2 I just bought will route the sound through it's Yamaha drivers to my 200 watt amp, so I don't think I'll need a sound card at all.

How does that all look?

My dream rig would be a nuclear powered super computer.
