Your Favorite Lore

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 4:17 am

Writing a current fanfiction has really given me a lot to think about. One thing that i'm really liking about it all is the universe that was created by the producer. With that in mind it's made me think about my own story that has been on the back burner for some time. From Fallout, Ever Quest, and Elder Scrolls to Star Wars, Star Trek, and other misc. movies/games/entities there are tons of lore behind those stories helping to envelope the reader, viewer, and/or player.

What is your favorite story/lore universe and why does it draw you into it?

TES is my favorite and Morrowind is what made me love it because unlike the newer installments in this series, the game had that inherent power to make me want to read more about those people, religion, great houses and politics. The text based dialogue helped a lot I think. The newer games give you the essentials right out of the box and there's too much focus on action and too little incentive to delve into study.

Considering the amount of TES Fan-Fic's and RP's I've been in I'd have to say that. It's so detailed and well thought out. I like LOTR lore as well, but have yet to read the Similarion.

Everquest 2 had the same appeal to me with each thing being extremely flushed out. Land X wasn't just "Name + Title" because it made the place sound cool. It was named that because of some specific event or a diety that used it as a home world. Then within that land little extra pieces resided in different parts to make it more appealing adding to the overall ambiance of it.

Still wonder what goes through the minds of the people trying to craft this stuff.

I really like the world of Deus Ex, with all its conspiracies, the whole augmentation conflict between non-augmented and mechanically augmented people in Human Revolution and the tension between the old mechanically augmented and nano augmented people in Deus Ex.

But then Invisible War is about 2 competing coffee stores with a storyline twist that mirrors the main plot, not that interesting. At least after the twist familiar names start popping up and then it's kinda cool again.

I love '90s cyberpunk universes like Syndicate (the original) and System Shock. I don't like cyberpunk universes that are any newer than that; worlds like Deus Ex seem to be more about the flair of chrome surfaces and ridiculous gadgetry (retracting sunglasses! :ahhh:) than anything else.

But in regards to fantasy universes, nothing beats my love for the Elder Scrolls. :)

Elder Scrolls, Lord of the Rings, Prince of Nothing/Aspect Emperor, Culture.

Depth, mostly, plus ideas and their utilization. Room for imagination's play, yet also structure.

One of my favourite lores is Warhammer 40,000

I think it draws me in due to its immense amount of lore. Also, I find it to be pretty good quality. Of course, there are also personal tastes of SCI-FI and such

EDIT: I also really enjoy the Fallout lore. One reason is that I like post-apocalyptic settings. Other reasons are its unique qualities, such as the BoS

I honestly think that it'd be Fallout for me, I never really thought about it until now. I find Elder Scrolls more interesting, but I prefer sci-fi over fantasy.
