Your First Card....

Post » Mon May 24, 2010 4:43 am

I dont remember the name of it but it was an ATI card. I had bought a 3DFX VoDoo card (remember when if you had one of those your were the sh*t?) and it was incompatible with my system and was close to the time they went out of business so the tech department didn't care bless their hearts, they were all packing up their desk and applying else where.

So I took it back and got my first ATI card this thing was super beast it came with 32mb of dedicated video memory lol. Ya and it was the best card on the market too! I also installed my first creative labs sound card and have stuck with ATI and creative labs almost exclusively since then. I built little wooden poles to mount my speakers on for the best surround sound it was bad as*.

Sorry ya I should have put this under off topic my bad. Oh well maybe a mod can move it. If it takes them as long as it does to patch the game though it will be here for awhile : )

Haha love this topic!

1. 6800 GT 256
2. 8800 GT
3. Another 8800 GT for SLI
4. 460 GTX SC
5. Another 460 GTX SC for SLI

I will admit, when I bought my second 8800, the SLI boost was rather upsetting. But WOW, the 460s are BEASTS in SLI! I can officially max out the first Crysis at a stable 40 FPS with 16xAA! AHHAH! Only took me 3.5 years from release :P.

A Gigabyte 7300GT oh how it was hard to keep it cool without a fan.
Switched to a palit 9800 GT 3 years later and then 8 months after I went with a Gigabyte 460 GTX, thinking of either going 580 GTX or another 460 GTX in a few months.

Wow.. see if I can remember, I know it was a "3DFX VooDoo" .. just not sure exactly which one, think it was a "VooDoo 2", then I got a "VooDoo 4", then my next buy was an ATi which was boxed backup the same day and exchanged for a "Geforce MX 16"

many many gfx-cards inbetween

Now my main cards are (I have 3 gaming systems): Geforce GTX 465 (unlocked to GTX 470), Geforce GTX 570 (two in SLi), and Geforce GTX 590.

An ATI of 4MB on a Windows 95 PC, then a NVIDIA TNT2 (I think it was of 32MB) on a PC with P3 and 320MB of RAM running on XP; later an ATI X200 on a PC with P4, 1GB of RAM on XP; a while later a 7300GS 256MB, Pentium D@3.4GHz, 2GB DDR2 sinngle-channel 533MHz (I know, it was crappy, I didn't buy a lot better motherboard that was only $20 USD more expensive with dual-channel up to 800MHz and support for Core 2 Quad/Duo); then a 8500GT 512MB, Core 2 Duo@2.33GHz, 1333MHz FSB, 4MB of Caché, 3GB DDR2 dual-channel 667MHz, Vista 64-bits; and the one I've been using for a long while until today: 9800GT 1GB GDDR3, Core 2 Duo@2.66GHz, 1333MHz, 4MB of Caché [I didn't buy it, an uncle gave it to me when he moved to Core i7 Extreme], 4GB DDR2 dual-channel 800MHz [also given by the same uncle] and 1TB HD I bought, pretty fast for not being SSD.

AGP biches

HA !

PCI slackers !

Not sure how you far back you want to go. I'm thinking a Diamond Stealth Cards, whatever was out back around 1996\97 I got to play Blood and DukeNuke 3D with.
Had the Geforce TNT2, 3Dfx Voodoo2,3,4...etc..etc, first ATI card was the 9700 Pro I believe. It's all just a blur

I cant even remeber. It was a ~$100 ATI card circa 2003/2004 which I bought because I couldnt run Star Wars the Old Republic (at all, on my intel integrated crap). Sad thing is, I had to return it because it physically wouldnt fit in the case (it was a 'slim' case, which wasn't wide enough), and I was so damn broke then I could afford to do a new rig (also, I wasnt super that into gaming).

My first REAL GPU (that I could use) would be the dual 7800GTX cards that were in my now-dead and replaced Dell.

A Voodoo card....incompatible? That's one thing 3dfx was known for (and why nvidia bought them out) was extreme compatibility. I never, ever had a single game I couldn't use it with when I had my voodoo2 8 meg. I understand you say your system specifically, but I had an IBM computer (rampant with proprietary hardware) and it still ran fine with it.

of course, i had pcs for years prior to that, but since you mention 3dfx specifically.... yeah only older gamers know what that company was and how awesome it was for it's time.

Got you all beat.

Early in 1998 I bought my first 3D card. Was a Hercules Stingray 128 3D. PCI, 6MB of RAM based on the 3Dfx Voodoo Rush Chipset - precusor to the Voodoo2. Cost me $600 AUD. It was a monster of a card with a daughter board. Bugger all stuff supported it too.

http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/graphics-cards/5719/hercules-stingray-128-3d

After that had a PCI Voodoo2 8MB SLI setup, TNT2 Ultra, Geforce 2 GTS, Geforce 3 Ti 200. Stopped gaming after that. Had a 9800 Pro somewhere in that time. Last year bought a 5770HD for triple head desktop support. Deciced to get back in gaming and that card ran Crysis 1 fairly well. Just recently moved to a 6870HD

Ya I couldnt really tell ya what the problem was. It was my first "real pc" and the first one I ever tried to game on or upgrade. I basically didnt know anything about pc's except how to put the card in and install drivers from the cd. I took it to some guys that where running a pc shop down the street they took a look at it for a few hours and told me it just wouldnt work in my system and that they had even called 3dfx tech support but that they didnt really help or care because they were pretty much in the middle of packing up and going out of business.
