If your still having low texture quality & popin after i

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 2:11 pm

There seems to be a bug with anti-aliasing on RAGE regardless of patch with nvidia cards.

Heres is my system specs.

EVGA GTX580 OC2
i7 2600k @ stock speed
intel mobo
16gb's of microns lowest latency ddr3 ram
2 RAID'd terabyte SATA drives
Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit
using onboard audio,
latest available NVIDIA 285 beta drivers.

before and after the patch... the popin was horrendous. I fixed with some tweaks since there where no graphics options at the time (until the patch).
Now they were back again, and the texture cache seemed to have no effect on texture quality.

So I was back to horrendous textures and pop-in. all in game settings were maxed out, even AA was at 16x

until this...

try follwing these steps exactly as i have them:

I removed my profile for RAGE from previous tweak recommendations (I set triple buffer and vsync in nvidia control panel back to global setting instead of forced on)

I then did the following from the new RAGE settings menu:

(1) set desired resolution
(2) Turn antialiasing down to 4x
(3) set vsync to SMART
(4) set anistropic fileting to HIGH
(5) set texture cache to LARGE (if ur card can handle it)
(6) set GPU transcode to ENABLED if able to.

Make ABSOULTELY sure to disable any custom settings from config or launch options in steam, and nvidia control panel, if you had set any prior to attempt manual tweaking.

once i did, saved the settings, and restarted the game... my god.... the graphics were drop dead gorgeous, with absoultely, positively, not a single hint of texture corruption or popin. It didn't even look like 4x AA either, it seriously looke like i was still set to 16x. ran smooth as silk, and just looke dperfect, like a game should on a PC :)

as soon as I set the anti-aliasing back to 16x... textures were washed out, were not drawing in the distance, and had pop-in.

I honestly beleive everything now is driver related. This pretty much proves it for me.

See if this fixes it for you.

BEFORE with AA set to 16x...

AFTER setting AA to 4x

note: seems the higher the AA, the worse the graphics glitches become, and AF becomes irrelevant (almost disabled from appearance), and textures looked washed out.

I've only notice extremly minor (almost unnoticeable) texture refresh turning right to left in large/open complex designed areas... its only a fraction of a second occurence in some of these areas, but your gonna have to look quick to catch it,

Definete driver issues. Other than that, looks like a whole new game... 'effin beautiful.. almost breath taking.

Why don't you post some differences between near objects? I guess the game won't look that great.
Panoramas don't help the many things this game lack.

I can confirm that this does fix the problems with the texture streaming i had. i have a very high end pc that can run about every game i own without any kind of problems and trying to run this game at max had serious issues with texture streaming and textures not loading fast enough. but making the changes listed above was able to remove all of the issues and the game looks amazing for me now compared to before. There are definitely some driver related problems that need to be addressed by nvidia and ati and i hope those problems are fixed in the coming days. i am a pc programmer and i know very well the sort of issues that hardware can pose and so i myself, am listening to what has been said from is software recently and i hope they can sort out the issues with the vendors and make other changes to the game as needed. this game has a lot of great potential that will be seen in the future i am sure of it. just give it time, i know they wont let us down.

This is nothing new, there have been several informative community posts both here and on the steam forums (if I'm honest, perhaps mainly on the steam forums) regarding Anti-Aliasing settings. AA 16x does not work with the game because it's incompatible with the megatexture system or something. 4x is the maximum you can go, for now.

I have tried with 4X AA. While it improves something, it's still far from solving anything.

looks better from a distance, but up close textures still look ugly and blurry.

gonna try using the 285.38 betas.

crappy texture remains but with 4x AA graphics quality improves a lot.
I'm impressed by megatexture technology, every area of the game is different, the art design clearly shows the power of this technology.

RAGE is clearly a non finished game and not a good presentation for ID Tech 5 but I'm sure that DooM4 will rocks

i doubt the game would be better if they'd work on it an additonal year or two.
i think the longer they mess with the development the more they would screw up the code.

duke nukem forever was also heavily outdated after all these years.

Does not fix the problem for me. The game just isn't using enough of my video ram post patch. I had it running perfectly (to me) before the patch and now I get horrible texture streaming with a contstant 15MB/s transfer rate from he harddrive whenever I turn the screen.

Pre patch the game use 1400mb vram, post patch it uses 850mb and I get horrible distracting texture streaming. Pre patch I had 75% GPU usage, now I've got 35%. This is a total waste of good hardware.

Since they locked the cvars, I can't make this run well at all.

so other than a couple of you.. it seems the 4x antialiasing (or less), is greately improving texture quality, drawing, refresh, etc...

the textures here look gorgeous, and close up, lo9ok great... im not sure if I've done something else. They really don't look too much differnt than any other game.

The only textures "close-up" that look akward (lower quality) are some stationary objects, generally inside buildings... but cramack has said they may release a text-pack or texture compression algoirithim change in the future to fix these? I really don't even notice it unless i try now... let me show u some more, uncompressed JPEGS...

I don't understand what you mean by your profile for rage, and for some reason why this morning I longer had the smart option for vsync

I mean make sure you tunr off any extra console options you may have added to your config profile (if you changed you rage configuration file manually) or if you added any STEAM launch options for the console... disable them, and then try my fix.

also, here's a boatload of uncompressed STEAM screenshots showing off how gorgeous it looks, close and far, running on my PC
