Your thoughts on Bioshock franchise?

Post » Thu May 09, 2013 9:45 pm

Hi, so we just got this Bioshock Rapture Edition. I popped the first one in the xbox. I'm glad I managed to fix this projector because the opening scenes just blew my mind.

I'm here for Fallout and TES. Aside from music and themes, are there any notable similiarites between Fallout3 and Bioshock?

I'm 10 minutes in and was wondering if there were things I should be aware of. I wouldn't feel too upset if I had to go back an hour or two in my save files for something missed but I'd rather not.

My thoughts? I think it's the most overrated franchise this gen. The gameplay is mediocre at best.

What's over rated about it? I'm not so good at keeping up with gaming news and reviews.

The praise it gets. The gameplay really isn't anything special. I was so bored with the combat by the end of Infinite, I was just going through the motions.

My main squeeze works at Gamestop and she says that Infinite is the most traded-in game, 2 weeks in a row.

So she brought back the first two games to see what the ruckus was about.

Edit: Presumably, you played a previous Bioshock? What did you think of those, pre-Infinite?

I find it a very great game. I enjoyed the first one IMMENSELY, the story was amazing, the writing superb, and the gameplay was very good. The second one was a bit hit and miss for me story wise, but the gameplay was virtually the same, the difference being the plus of having plasmid/weapon wielding simultaneously. The third one didn't interest me because it comes off to steampunk for my tastes, but I can't give real opinion on 3.

Doesn't surprise me. It's a ten hour affair I'll never pick up again.

Thanks for shedding some light on me. I think I may feel the same way after I experience more of the game.

That was a major reason for Infinite. Too short of game play and lack of content.

Ha ha. Well, I've played 10 minutes and now I'm on here asking for help. It feels like it can progress in ways I'm probably interested in. We'll see.

My issue with Bioshock 2 wasn't so much an issue of the core gameplay, it's just it was a sequel with no real oomph. It's not a bad game, just a bit uninteresting story wise. It has certain hooks that can be interesting, but the only real interesting peaces, in my opinion, is the Pre-War lore on Rapture.

Bioshock is an interesting game though for me. People went on about how great it was, and to my surprise, this game I bought for cheap blew me out the water. It's quite a rich story. The levels are fairly linear, but it's an FPS. But the story is remarkable in itself, let alone for an FPS (Most FPS games have a real svcky story)

That was going to be my next question actually. If they had any RPG qualities to them and if the games tied in to each other. From Infinite trailers, it looks as if though it's a stand alone game.

It's quite like Mass Effect in that I consider both franchises to be extremely overrated.

Stick to it. The story alone is well worth it. I have no issue with the gameplay. It's a standard FPS with an added plasmid element. I enjoyed the game quite a bit. The second game was a good for me but I think it regressed a little. I would say the first game is a must play based solely on the story and if you like the ending gameplay of the first, you'll like the second.

I actually played Bioshock after I bought it super cheap and got about a third through the game. Then I put it down for like a year and started playing it again and fell in love. I haven't played Infinite yet, but my friend played it and he really loved the game. I think he's beat it twice so far.

Liked the first one, consider it my favorite game. Martyr explained a good amount of it.

Bioshock 2 I did not like too much. Story was quite bland and not very interesting with the gameplay not having much difference to the first. The addition of the unnecessary multiplayer didn't help either.

I liked Infinite as well. Playing it for the first few days the 'new game' feelings are still kicking and you think this new game is the best game ever. A few weeks later you begin to realize some of its flaws and that it wasn't as good was you really thought. I believe Infinite one is the most overrated one out of all of them and if anything has "dumb downed" itself compare to previous games. The story is good yes, the atmosphere outstand. But the rest? The powers have simply come to just doing damage (excluding Possession). Levels are more linear than ever, previous Bioshock games at least had some expanded levels with plenty of exploration that could be done. In Infinite its sort of a straight line in most places with scripted enemies from one area to the next. I did find the gameplay fun but it wasn't anything too special. Overall, do I love the game and had fun with it.

All of the Bioshock games have a fantastic story however (Bioshock 2 arguably) and I find it to be some of the most fun I could get out of an FPS. Both a good story and some very fun gameplay.

Yes, I hated how the "levels" felt so small and scripted. And you're right about the powers, they had a chance to do something truly special there.

Bioshock- Good but INCREDIBLY over rated.
Bioshock 2- Aweful.
Bioshock Infinite- Great, the best out of all three.

Tried BioShock 1. Gameplay was crap and like Half-Life 2, which is praised for its story, it completely let me down in that regard and I never managed to finish it.

Don't know why shooters with "good" stories and crappy shooting are praised as the best of the genre.

I remember almost passing on Bioshock 1, but someone urged me to play it. After popping it in at midnight a few months after it coming out and seeing its beautiful visuals (the water visuals was some of the best across all platforms) I fell in love. Journeying to a modernized Atlantis. It was heaven. Story wasn't half bad either. Interesting and cool.

Bioshock 2 however... Sigh.

Bioshock Infinite was appealing for about 50% of the game. Seeing the world and lively residents. I loved experiencing the culture and environment. However, I felt that the characters weren't as interesting. I love Elizabeth, but her audiologs along with everyone else's outside of booker's were a pain to listen to. So unlike that of Bioshock 1. I felt the lore and depth was stronger in Bioshock 1. I also loved Songbird who I felt was a missed opportunity.

In conclusion, I love Bioshock. Not my favorite game series, but the first one is in my top 5.

They literally were a PAIN to listen to for me. Lady Comstock's voxophones are so loud they literally hurt my ear drums. Note that the volume was at a moderate setting that for most other games that I played, was not very loud at all.

Not a real flaw of the game, but seriously, WHY SO LOUD?!

Me thinks you got the first game and Infinite mixed up.

It's just that Comstock seemed like an awesome character, but all of his dialogue lacked intensity. No one seemed interesting in the voxophones unlike Bioshock 1. That first lady Comstock voxophone set the tone for the rest I think. Dull and boring.

Being religiously conflicted is interesting. How it managed to bore me is beyond me.

I played on console though, so I didn't notice any audio issues.

As for gameplay, it matched Halo 3 for me and almost Call of Duty 4. Same with Half Life 2. Puzzles (designed for 4 year olds) mixed with some intense shooting sequences, I was pleased. Bioshock had plasmids and a solid shooting mechanic for its time.

There's certainly no lack of content. The level of detail in the artwork alone makes it one worth playing, IMO. Sure, it's a decent shooter at best, but the atmosphere and plot are the stars of the show. The shooting is just to break things up a bit.

The shooting is to break things up? What? This IS a shooter. And some of the areas are downright lazy. Don't even get me started on the beach scene please.

You can call it a shooter because the game engine uses that format, sure. That doesn't mean that the people that actually designed the game content have to focus the game on shooting. I think a lot of the areas in Infinite are there to advance the story and to provide atmosphere and context rather than targets to shoot at. There are many different kinds of games that use the FPS format as a base, but don't take you down the road of a typical military sim shooter.
