So I tried. I then talked with both Lydia and Aela but neither had any option to marry.

I don't think so, my wife died and since then I haven't had the option to remarry, plus I keep getting the "Oh, you look like you're married so treat your wife well" remark from random people so I don't think the game has registered her death.
