100 elemental resist...

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 6:23 am

On xbox 360, before patch 1.2, I enchanted a full set of armor with (over) 100 resist all elemental damage. I had no other magic resistance effects active and I clearly took no damage from elemental attacks. Can anyone else confirm this?

I even had a lesser set of armor with resistances at 92, and the elemental damage I received was still significant. I then used an enchanting potion to push my resistances past 100 and was subsequently immune to elemental damage.

Obviously patch 1.2 broke resistances, but I am now reading that elemental resistances are capped at 85... Is this new to patch 1.3 or was it capped at 85 on the PC prior to 1.2? Did anyone verify this 85 cap on Xbox prior to 1.2?

I would appreciate replies from anyone who has tested this themselves in-game, or can link to posts by people who have tested it.

If you don't take enough damage to beat your health regen, the red bar never shows up AFAIK. All resistances (including poison and disease, buggily) were supposedly capped at 80 in the base game. Only 1.2 changed that, but not on purpose. I've never tested it, though, so I can't offer conclusive evidence.

Unfortunately I got bored and deleted that character or I would roll back my game and test it myself. I will test it once the 1.3 patch is available on Xbox (and I've maxed my enchanting again...). I'm interested to know now though since I might have to rethink my build if I can't eliminate elemental damage and swat a cave full of mages like flies...

You can still practically eliminate all elemental damage once resistances are fixed. Elemental resistances get applied after magic resistance, so if you max out magic and elemental resistances, you'll have something like 95-97% resistance. If you also get the max spell absorption, for all intents and purposes, you'll be invincible to magic.

I've read the posts on stacking resistances, but my experience pre-1.2 was that this was unnecessary since I could achieve 100 elemental resist.

Unfortunately, stacking 85 magic and elemental resist is only practical (or possible maybe...) with a shield, which would force me to rethink my 2-handed Nord...

You can find a lot of information in this thread. But I'll sum it up for you:

- Elemental and Magic Resistances are broken as of 1.2.
- "Avoid"-Effects from Atronach Stone or Alteration Perk still work.
- Elemental Resists were always capped at 85% BUT they would stack multiplicativley with Magic Resist (capped at 85%, too). Thus when capping Elemental and Magic resist you would reduce damage taken to 2.25%. Those 2.25% can be avoided with an up to 80% chance by using Atronach Stone and Alteration Perk.

I've read that thread but couldn't find numbers to validate the 85 elemental cap. Again, my experience pre-1.2 on Xbox was that at 92 elemental resist I took damage but at 100+ I was immune. This may have changed with 1.3 or I could be crazy, but I currently have no way to test it myself until the 1.3 patch hits xbox.

Did you have the Alteration Perk or Atronach Stone or Magic Resistance along with the 100%? There has been quite a lot of testing pre 1.2. confirming 85% cap but with any chance of full resist or additional Magic Resistance you could easily get the impression of being immune to Elemental Damage. I Remeber stacking Fire Resistance to 100+ pre 1.2. and still taking fire damage...

Hmm... Very strange. I'm certain I had no other effects active but I have no way currently to verify I was truly immune to elemental damage. I do know that after enchanting my armor to 100 resist my health bar did not even appear when being struck by either spells or dragon breath, and I had no health regen bonuses active.

Were you on Xbox when you took fire damage even with 100 resist? How did you achieve the 100 resist? Are you sure you were not receiving damage from other sources?

Ofcourse it's really irrelevant whether or not it was possible pre-1.2 since I'm actually interested in the situation in 1.3. I'll just have to test it myself when 1.3 hits Xbox...

Here's a thread where someone else seems convinced they achieved frost immunity through vampirism:

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1308324-13-patch-resistances-still-not-fixed-or-is-there-a-cap/page__st__20

Can anyone else support this? The OP of that thread seems to support the idea of a cap though...

i still play on patch 1.1 on pc here. resistences were ALWAYS capped at 85% from day 1 so you either took not enough damage or you didnt check correctly. 100% is not longer possible and never was in skyrim.

except for the absorb effect but this one is bugged like hell because it even absorbs potion effects (they count as restoration spell) and all other friendly spells that are cast on the player. this was never the case with absorb before skyrim so i assume its a bug.

capping magic resistance at 85% and then capping fire resistance brings you at a very high resitance of dmg total. but anything above 85% magic resist is not useful believe it or not. even on master ancient dragons and master casters can barely hurt you with 85% magic resist.
