360 version a Mandatory Install?

Post » Tue Sep 27, 2011 12:31 am

I heard the news today that Rage will be on 3 discs for the 360 version, which would add up to a 22 gig installation on the hard drive. It is highly recommend that the whole game is installed, and if that can't be accomplished, it is recommended that you install at least one of the sections (discs) at a time. The PS3 version comes on 1 blu ray with a MANDATORY 8 gig install. I've been using my friends new 360 slim and plan on buying Rage for it, but it is only the 4 gig model, not nearly enough memory to install even one of the discs. I have a 60 gig hard drive, but that is incompatible with the slim model of XBOX 360s. Is the install for 360 mandatory? Will I be experiencing a lesser game in terms of quality if I don't install?

No, Rage can be played without installing on the 360, but it was said to be the poorest way to play the game; expect a lot of texture pop-up as it streams in from the DVD.

I suppose id had to support all 360s including ones not having a hard drive.

Installing will always give you a better quality of experience then not installing, so yes, you won't have the best experience possible unless you install, but that doesn't mean the game will be unplayable. You'll be fine no installing, so long as you don't expect PS3 and PC quality graphics, mayber a few extra load times, which is no big deal.

Nope it's not mandatory - but will greatly affect the texture loading, putting you in the worst case.

For Rage data streaming, PC HDD full install > 360 HDD full install > PS3 partial install > 360 HDD cache > 360 DVD

The 360 cache partition performance is much worse than you would expect, due to the required filesystem overhead.

Get the game for PC and you won't have any problems, the game's super optimized it runs on relatively cheap hardware - but the PC version is currently on par with consoles - texture's are relatively similar.

Will the texture pop in be really bad and noticeable? I'm not a graphics [censored] so I can deal with whatever it ends up looking like.
