3rd Person?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:22 pm

Any chance of there being a 3RD person display option for 'Brink'?

I enjoy both FPS (early CoD, Halo, Killzone, Resistance, etc) and 3rd Person (Gears, Battlefield, SOCOM, etc) and play whichever best fits my mood - but will 'Brink' offer something similar to the current 'Call of Duty' where, depending on the game type the player actually has the option of playing the game in a First OR Third Person mode?

I totally dig the character designs and ability for personalization in this game and just think it'd be a waste to take the time to customize your character, then only see him at load and between-match screens.

I absolutely agree with you, if there was third person it would give Splash Damage a chance to show off their character’s design. I also enjoy SOCOM and there aren’t many third person games out there. However the games “SMART” system wouldn’t work in third person and it would also destroy the whole purpose of free running. The only way I can see this working if is they make a free running system similar to Assassins Creed.

Exactly what I was thinking. For any game that has as much customization as this, as far as character models go, you would think that the best option would be to make it in 3rd person. From what I've seen though, it looks to run really well as an FPS. The SMART system I think would run great in either 1st person or 3rd person, the only question for it being in 3rd person is how well the animations look, but like I said, it's looking great so far!

My motto towards both is that you customize your character to represent to others your outlook and play style. You know what you do and who you are, so looking at your character's backside seems pointless in my views.

in my opinion, third person shooters in general are severely lacking. having a third person mode would be just a waste of resources, that could be better put into another multiplayer mode. Look at mw2, they put a third person view in cage match and now in the mode is hardly touched . MGO is another example of a third person shooter, due to aiming issues and constantly switching views to get better accuracy..... in combo with the cumbersome control scheme. the game slowly went away.... to me third person takes away from the experience. :mohawk:

Yeah it seems that with a 1st person aspect you really get svcked into the experience and games in general, seem to play better in 1st person as opposed to 3rd. To me, the character customization is more a prideful representation of your play style, regardless if I can see it while I'm playing or just in the menus. and something that I can't wait to mess around with.

You could say that but it depends on the developers, the SOCOM franchise is very proper for it's third person gameplay. In my opinion we need more third person shooters and less first person, every first person game is starting to play out the same. But thats only my opinion.

You're right but the thing is, if I customize my character I want to see it in game myself and not just showing off. They can give you a button to switch between views like it was in vtmb and adapt SMART and combat system for 3dp view. Everyone will be happy.

Adding to my own thread here...
I sort of went on a tangent in another post re: 'Influences', so I thought I'd copy it here as I feel it's on-topic.

"Don't know about 'gaming' influences, but I totally love the 'Freerunning' style of character movement - I guess the next closest thing to that could be some moves in the 'Prince of Persia' series, but that's not even close to the 'Wow' factor of locomotion I've seen in Brink's trailers.

The 'Freerunning' character animations are another reason I think Brink would benefit from a 3rd person view (ala Prince') - seeing obstacles, rooms, enemies, etc. in direct relationship to your character, I feel facilitates movement and allows players to better realize what his character can or cannot do; 'Is that roof ledge too high to reach?", "Does that divider call for a simple hop or do I need a hand-spring, a flip?".

I assume Beth' has addressed the POV issues through level design; perhaps if you can see it within a few character feet you can climb, reach, jump, hurdle it? Won't know until a demo, but worst case; we'll see a bunch of players trying to run around jumping to grab unreachable things - least case - we don't get to see the awesome character animations unless someone else performs them."

Have to agree that third person would be unimportant. Maybe a button where you can free-move the camera around your character while in-game? That way they won't have to waste a sizeable amount of development time and money on something that has no purpose other than to satisfy people's innate narcissism concerning their character.

Either way, wasting so much time/money on something like that should be an afterthought at best. Sure I'd try it out, but I'd rather be trying out more content delivered with the game. Maybe even a 3rd person DLC wouldn't be a bad idea haha. Make those that want it pay for the cost. ;)

I think that the changable view is very good solution. Animations of models are good so i dont see any troubles with it..

Nah, 3rd person would feel so much distinct from the game. 3rd person works out with a bit different games. My fav is Max Payne. It's really hard to make aiming and accuracy good in 3rd and I really don't think it's a good idea to put it in game. Personally I would rather be good player than look good to myself, if you know what I mean.

I think it might be cool if they enabled a third person for the super light class when they are free-running. Maybe it could be like a perk for the light class; (Just trying to be constructive, I'm neutral to the idea) Maybe there could be an 'Adrenaline Perk' in which after "X" amount of "X" gained/done (etc.) you can enable a 2minute perk to view your character in 3rd person, and you'd also have a stamina and sprinting boost during free-running.
I think that 3rd person added with a stamina boost could get overwhelming and too much to take in while viewing in 1st person. So a 3rd person view w/adrenaline rush would increase your free-running skills and speed, and the 3rd person would make it look even cooler as if it were a movie scene.
There's my input.

I think that 3rd person will give on console a lot more fun. That should be cool, if the players could record own gameplays :-).

No this is an FPS not a TPS or a MMORPG. This is a SD game after all so I can't see them doing this and I would not want them to anyway.

I dont tell that Brink should be only with 3rd person. Of course i like 1rd person much better, but this feature can in some moments be useful

There's currently no plans for a 3rd person perspective. Brink is a first person shooter.

id like kill cams in this game or just see yourself getting killed IE: your jumping through the air and someone jumps after you and knifes you

Quick replied after reading OP so sorry if someone's already pointed this out-

If you're all up for looking at your character what about a cinematic 3rd person button that stays active while doing a long 1.5s vault with SMART or just to bask in your awesome for a few seconds.

The only problem with this would be you'd be sacrificing aesthetics for swift game play seeing as even whilst doing fast action movements such as jumping and sliding especially you can still turn and shoot at oblique angles.

Edit: To make free running more like Assassin's Creed would be to put the game on rails it so badly tries to avoid; it would be a bad move + it would make SMART clunky and linear without the 3 directional choices currently available.
