about that dragonborn.com

Four years ago, MMO game developer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Shwayder -- former EQ2 staffer, webmaster of http://www.nerfbat.com/about/ & currently part of the http://www.ea.com/reckoning gang) registered the domain http://www.whois.net/whois/dragonborn.com.com

Just lucky? Do you think he had some early insider information about Skyrim back in 2007, or do you think it just happened to be a semi-common fantasy-setting type name that he registered for some other, unknown reason? It seems to currently be just a placeholder domain at the moment but I am sure the domain must have some added financial value in the wake of Skyrim's release. Will Bethesda offer to buy it, or ((removed references to unrelated litigation))

I just thought it was very ... curious.

Dragonborn isn't really a term exclusive to Skyrim. I believe it's in D&D as well to describe a race of humanoid dragons or something like that (I'm not a D&D fan). I'd imagine it's in other fantasy as well.

I'd say it's a fairly common name to arrive at. I mean, just off the top of my head, there's the Wheel of Time character, Rand al'Thor, who's also known as the "Dragon Reborn". So that name has been bandied about for two decades, already, and it's strikingly similar to "Dragonborn".

No, I don't think there's a lawsuit to be had, at least as long as it's just a website. I mean, in the wake of Oblivion, there were plenty of related websites registered. Like kvatch.com.

Well, "scrolls" seems to be a fairly generic "fantasy" word as well.

Bad idea to make this about the Mojang lawsuit. Discussions about Bethesda/Zenimax's legal disputes aren't allowed.

Ok, wasn't supposed to be about that so I'll edit my posts :D

So, just coincidence then is the consensus.

I was watching the new http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1AenlOEXao and thinking what a decent TV miniseries (ala Game of Thrones) it might make, then got curious what such a series might be called, and Dragonborn seemed a possible choice....

Possibly because it was before some sort of copyright registration.... Unless there are plans for a Limbo of the Lost Spiritual sequel.

I'd doubt he had any clue. Dragonborn were added as a race in D&D years ago, and I'm sure there were plenty of Draconic races well before that in other fantasies as well.

Skyrim was in development in 2007, and I suppose even with the strictest NDA info could have gotten out. I do think it's a coincidence, though.
