About the story in Skyrim..

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 7:53 am

Does anyone else feel that the dragonborn storyline isn't main quest material? I'm not saying the writing is bad or anything, but I don't think a fantasy themed story fits the game world. The game world is very gritty and realistic, and I feel like the more natural encounters (such as wolves, bandits, bears) feel more realistic.

Do you think the main quest would have been better if it was a realistic story about the imperials and the stormcloaks, kings and kingdoms. And the main quest could have you getting involved in faction politics and every decision you make alters the game world in some way. Some of the imperial and stormcloak stuff in the game is like this, like taking over whiterun but it still seems like a huge wasted opportunity.

Imagine a story based around being a stomr cloak trying to plan out an attack on imperial wagons to cripple their food supply, and seeing the effects of that, like starving troops and lower morale of the other side. Or being a royal assassin and taking out a commander of another army, and thus altering the battles and conflicts in the game world.

I think Bethesda had a great opportunity to make something really special but instead we got a dragonborn story, which feels like an easter egg sidequest.

What if Skyrim had decisions and factions like New Vegas, except the decision you made were even deeper and had bigger consequences. I feel that Beth could have done this since they got a lot more development time than NV.

I just realized this topic might be good for the "future TES game ideas" thread.

dude, you are gonna be the public enemy of this forum.

I agree with you however. The whole dragonborn save the world thing is so played out.

There is a lot of stuff that could be done better with Skyrims' story, it is a bit meh i think everyone would agree with that. At least Oblivions' main quest had a little bit of drama and emotion (at the end).

Yeah i would like to see choices/consequences in some form, it makes everyones experience that little bit different and can increase replay value.

Wow, triple post...really?

Anyway, I'm not thrilled with the main quest, in fact, I tend to ignore it. I would've been happier had the civil war questline been the main quest, and just forget about the dragons altogether. I seem tro remember prior to release something that went like this: "When the sons of Skyrim spill their own blood." Yet that seems to take a back seat to dragons...dragons, really? It's not like they haven't been done to death over the years...surely this is an original idea, right? Right?

Yes, I believe the civil war should've been the focus of the game. bethesda could've made this really epic, but tried to do too much...and it fell flat.

I think the epic story would fit very well in Oblivion, but that game had its own fantasy story. And I find it strange that Skyrim has a grittier, more realistic game world yet the storyline is even more fantasy themed than Oblivons. It just doesnt fit.

Sorry, I'm used to another forum where when you post a 2nd time it auto merges it into your OP.

I recently saw a post in the mod forums requresting beast races to be removed from the game on the account that they don't fit the game world. Well done Bethesda! You've turned your fantasy universe into a medieval one

On topic, yes the game world does seem quite realistic to me too and as such the few fantasy elements in it seem pretty out of place. But i attempt to counter that with mods. Realism is for simulators :hehe:

Yeah, the beast races do feel kind of silly in this game world. It's even worse when people don't react to seeing a lizard person. The only time we really see any kind of bullying is in Windhelm. So much more could have been done with that to make the world more believable.

If you grew up around lizard and cat men you probably wouldn't "react" to them on a dailly basis either. So you would have Bethesda remove beast races and dragons to make the game more "believable"?

Glad you're not in charge :)

I think that the concept of the MQ is fitting, but I also think it should have been executed better with a better feel. I also think the CW should have had a bigger role.

Agreed, for me Skyrim storyline have a good concept and has the potensial to be epic however like one of the above post said, they try to include many thing in the MQ but fail to connect them all into one good storyline.

For example, give the civil war more role in the MQ, for all the hype they put in the trailer about the civil war it seems rather insignificant
As it is currently the civil war seems to be one of the key element in the storyline at the opening yet they seems to drop its significance abruptly

And its not only in the MQ it happens in colege of winterhold too like the conflict with synod was never completly resolved

Don't get me wrong, I like Skyrim but as I play game mostly for their storyline it's bothering me

I am thoroughly enjoying the Main Quest, I think it's very interesting and well written. I do miss the Plains of Oblivion, and Mehrunes Dagon was perhaps the most awesomely terrifying enemy I've ever encountered in a game, but I'm enjoying the lore of the dragons and the ancient Nords etc. etc.

Maybe they cut something from it to save for DLC. Maybe the Thalmor attempt to ban the moot or something along those lines..

Or they storm the moot and arrest lots of Nords for worshipping Talos.

You would be right to say that the main quest line is filled with horrible writing.

TES is a fantasy game. It needs a fantasy plot.
I agree that the MQ isnt up to scratch, but i'll be honest; I have an imagination. That helps loads to make a not so good plot seem amazing.

Not just the main quest in my opinion, everything from passing comments given by guards to player dialogue options has alot of facepalm moments.

Then again, the writing isn't done by professional writers at Bethesda apparently, so what can you expect.
