Add USB Keyboard support for hotkeys...?

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 9:44 am

The game could be SOOO much more fluid to play with hot keys on a keyboard, just like like left and right are now.... If Kinect can be added, I'd think simple USB keyboard support could be too....

I'd LOVE to to have a PC for just this game, but no way can I afford it... I don't know anything about coding, but it doesn't seem like this one would be too hard to pull off, and it would be pretty cool considering how long PS3 users had to wait for a functioning game, that still isn't QUITE up to par with it's counterpart... and we have to wait longer for DLC...

Also, IMO it'd be cool if kill cams were just triggered by the press of a button or a toggle, instead of percentages and chance... Like in GTA4, there's just a button for the "make stuff look cool cam"...

I agree. USB keyboard hotkey support should be easy and could help a lot.

Even though I personally would prefer an improved PS3 favorites menu, as described in http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1356904-request-3-time-savers/, to simply mimic a PC keyboard on PS3 with a connected USB keyboard could be a very simple and effective solution to cure the current PS3 hotkey pain.

Sorry to have to disagree but ifI'm holding a pad to play the game, sat back on my sofa, I'd find having a keyboard kicking around more immersion breaking than a couple of taps within the favourites list.

i'm sorry, just play the game on PC if you want keyboard support. there are ways to get cheaper games (and i'm not talking about illegally downloading).

tbh i'm a keyboard shortcut junkie. i love programs like vim that i can do everything w/o touching that damnable mouse.

but the problem with usb-keyboard is you're typically two handing the ps3 controller. I think moving a hand to the KB and trying to locate the home row, then find your shortcut could be more difficult. Besides I would bet they didn't leave event handling code for a keyboard in the PS3 build.

I'd actually like the just to get ONE input method working right first too.

It wouldn't surprise me if the code is actually in there and sometimes conflicts with the input sensing routines, giving us menu lag and missed input events.

How's that for a thought? ;)

that's a pretty solid theory.

in fact, on a somewhat related topic, if you pop dungeon seige III into your PS3 and then went into the settings menu you're going to find PC-specific settings options that don't affect anything in the PS3/X360 version - one of the settings (i believe) being cursor speed, which doesn't exist because there's no mouse cursor in the console versions.

PS3 keyboard support is optional, not mandatory, so you may just ignore it.
But for people who are used to it, a keyboard can help a lot.

As a mage, I probably have to spend 20% of PS3 playing time withing the clumsy PS3 Skyrim favorites menu.
With keyboard support, I finally could spend this time playing the game - instead of fighting with the interface.

Even if only the most essential 10 spells/shouts could be assigned to the 10 function keys of a keyboard, this could help a lot. For example, the shout “Aura Whisper” appears at the top of the PS3 favorite menu, while the shout “Unrelenting Force" appears at the bottom of the list. With dozens of other, unrelated favorites between them, switching just these two shouts in a dungeon is a pain, costing a lot of precious playing time. With keyboard support, changing these shouts finally could be done easily and swiftly.

just want to be clear, i would not get my panties in a bunch if they added this support. and I have a wireless bt keyboard i keep for the ps3 anyway - so i might even use it.

i was just saying i don't think its nearly as convenient as when pc gaming you use the shortcuts becuase you have to reset your hand every time.

Perhaps I could get used to it though.

I am also an ardent hater of the favorites menu - number one reason I don't like magery in this game is because of the pause menu, er.. I mean the favorites menu. Its deplorable.

Still, I think it would be easier for them to revert to the d-pad hotkeys and leave the favorites menu either mappable or mapped in a single direction.

At any rate we aren't going to get anything because they are not going to improve this horrific UI unless you consider the kinect stuff improvements.

I agree. Perpaps a minimum solution for the currently deplorable favorites menu could be improved sorting:

Currently everything (shouts, spells, weapons, potions...) is sorted alphabetically into a huge messy pile:
  • You often have to steer through the entire pile just to switch one shout
  • You sometimes do no know if something is a shout or a spell
  • The entire mess appears without structure
Improved sorting using categories (shouts first, then spells... potions last) could fix that:
  • It would be easier and faster to switch shouts
  • You know if something is a shout or a spell
  • The entire favorites menu appears organized
Example:

Currently, the messy favorites pile looks like this:
A-Shout
A-Spell
A-Weapon
A-Potion
B-Shout
B-Spell
B-Weapon
B-Potion
Z-Shout
Z-Spell
Z-Weapon
Z-Potion

A categorized favorites menu, using colors, could look like this:
A-Shout
B-Shout
Z-Shout
A-Spell
B-Spell
Z-Spell
A-Weapon
B-Weapon
Z-Weapon
A-Potion
B-Potion
Z-Potion

Totally agree - current Hk system makes a belief suspending mess. But the best joke is listening to Beths Dev team on the youtube interviews prior to game release describing how quick and inuitive the new favorite menu system is - when the featured guys were only switching between a scant few items. They claimed everything in favourites was accessible in a couple of button presses. So.....press press new sword, press press, changed to spell, press press different armour, yeah right! How about - in reality, press for loooong list of items that you can't read on a tv screen without crawling over to the tv set on your knees - or - ensuring you thoroughly learn the relative position of each desired item in the list and don't change it about too often. Then have to spend ages it seem scrolling up and down. In real time, if you mucked about that much trying to put away you sword and get out a spell you'd be history in a blink. In Oblivion, whilst the limit of just eight hotkeys felt limiting at times at least the switch over or consumption of potion etc was immediate and didn't hold up combat in that unrealistic pause that skyrim does. PS3 does have a clip-on keyboad available - it doesn't have to be a case of putting down the controller and wrestling with a fullsize pc keyboard on your lap........

we are in complete agreement. i can't stand the pause in combat - it might as well be turn based at that point.

awesome idea. probably never get implemented but that would be the ultimate.

another thing is the two hotkeys dont actually even work here - is this also true for everyone else?

i have a 2h argonian that has a warhammer as #1 and torch as #2. If I have the torch equipped and try to switch to the warhammer it basically just un-equips the torch and leaves my hands up as if to brawl. the only fix is to cycle from 'sheathed' to 'ready'.

basically have this problem with every character where often pressing a hotkey (left or right on d-pad) only un-equips the currently active items and leaves me empty handed. If I go into the inventory menu they do look equipped though. this has been since 11-11-11, not that BS cares.

++

as for a sorted favorites menu I don't see much benefit. It still pauses the game. Ideally I guess you would get both, more (working) hotkeys and a worthwhile favorites menu but sadly we probably will get neither.

I'm sure Gstaff can drop in here and say sth to the effect of:

"We are working on title updates but I cant say anything right now. Please check the patch notes when they are released."

...there, now we don't need to pine for an official comment since the above will provide as much as we ever get.

I also had problems with the two hotkeys and sometimes weird results. I finally realized that (at least for me) hotkey 1 only works correctly for the left hand and hotkey 2 only works correctly for the right hand. Therefore, I use the two hotkeys only as "default keys of last resort", to load a shield with hotkey 1 into the left hand and a sword with hotkey 2 into the right hand - usually in the moment when I am fed up with fighting the favorites menu instead of the enemy.

PS3 does have a clip-on keyboad available - it doesn't have to be a case of putting down the controller and wrestling with a fullsize pc keyboard on your lap.
Indeed. Perhaps we should donate a PS3 keyboard to the PS3 dev team to learn about this:
Keyboards on PS3 actually are used.
