Addicted to Efficient Leveling

Post » Tue Mar 15, 2011 2:20 am

I'm addicted to efficient leveling. I can't play the game normally anymore. Every time I play, I can't help but maximize the attribute modifiers! I always start out thinking "oh, this is just gonna be a quick, casual play-through, just like old times! Boy playing this game sure was fun back then". Then I just go all out, efficient leveling like a mad-man and draining all the fun out of the game. I think I've efficient leveled 5 or 6 characters; one is above level 40 and the rest are around level 20. Anybody else have this issue?

Years ago I would underlevel my characters and just play the game for what it is.
These days I couldnt imagine playing anything else but efficient level. Getting the +5 is so much more satisfying than a bunch of +2, and it makes leveling up so satisfying.

I read many people on these forums complaining that it 'ruins the fun,' but I never see it that way. By swapping the majors and minors it allows me to simply role play the character without fear of leveling up.
I guess it helps that my hybrid build is a Dunmer. Blade, bow and magic all suit his RP background. :twirl:

Maybe you just need more motivation to smash some skulls in. You don't need optimal stats to kill things, it helps but whats the point in getting all the stats if you are not doing anything with them? I'm guilty of efficient leveling my endurance though I like getting that maxed out as fast as possible. If you're not having any fun though take a break from leveling and look for some books or do some quests. I like gambling in the arena if I'm training or in between lost a lot of gold made some of it back probably shouldn't bet 100 every time but I can't spend any more than that.

I enjoy efficiently leveling some attributes and completely ignoring others. I find it really helps define the character. My current character (glass cannon no-melee mystic archer) prioritizes her attributes this way:

Agility (feeds her bow), Intelligence and willpower (feed her spells).

Personality (she wants everyone to like her).

Speed (handy, but when you can control minds or disappear not that important).

She then completely ignores (leaving them at base): Endurance (I did say GLASS cannon), Strength (she doesn't care about carrying a lot of loot and will never touch a melee weapon or h2h), Luck (she believes in making her own).

I guess my point here is that for us at least, it becomes much easier to get those +5's if you're only focused on a few attributes. By the same token, when you live or die by a few attributes, building them effectively is important.

In Morrowind, I used to avoid improving mayor and minor skills while actually playing, until I decided it was the time to gaining a level, then having authentic training sessions to make my character levelling optimally.

One day, I installed a mod that gives me the 5 in an attribute, with only one increment on a related attribute. The game becomes way more enjoyable. When started playing Oblivion, I installed a mod doing the same without hesitation.

Guilty as charged, I'm afraid. I can't imagine playing without trying to level efficiently. At each new level I identify the two attributes for my +5 modifier (I am also addicted to +5,+5,+1). Then I train those two attributes before I do anything else that level. All of my characters have OCD!

If you're on the PC you could put a mod to change that. I put a mod that always makes 5x attributes every time I level, it's a kind of a cheat but efficient leveling just bored me. There are also mods that change the way you gain attributes, and that's what I'm using in Morrowind.

I hate efficient Leveling I mean I just want to play the game. My current build does takes advantage of Efficient Leveling but its done differently.

I've done more than my share of efficiency leveling. Having done it so many times, I eventually resorted to using console commands to fastrack and "simulate" my efficiency leveling (since items don't level with you either). Of course, I gradually got tired of that too and now I just play, not worrying so much about my leveling anymore.

Yeah, I used to have the same problem. Everytime I played I promised myself that I wouldn't do it this time, but I always wound up doing it again. I even loaded the Skills Diary mod so that I could track my progress and would figure out what I would get training in each level :sigh: Finally, I switched to Oblivion XP and loved it so much, I took over development of the mod :) There are lots of mods out there to help with levelling - perhaps trying one of them is the way to go.

The development of the character (including her story) is the only reason for me to play a role playing game. For me, the fun is planning the leveling development each level. Running around killing stuff is boring for me. The leveling system in TES is the best feature of the franchise and why it is so unique. If Bethesda takes it out, there's little reason to play anymore as far as I am concerned.

I'm sorry for you. There's a mod that alters how you get attribute points, this could help you.;

I usually try my best in any game to get strong, but I never resort to efficient leveling. That just destroys my experience
