I had come to admire Aela's fierce independence, so naturally I wanted to domesticate her, to make her conformable as other household Aelas. We were in the dungeon where we had just released the ghost of Kodlak Whitemane, and I knew that with my promotion I could ask her hand. So i put on the necklace, and we exchanged the proper words. Now, I understood that I had to speak to the priest in Riften, but I felt compelled to tie up a few loose ends first. So I asked Aela to follow me, but she demurred, pointing out I already had someone. Sure enough, there was Lydia, looking more morose than usual, and I told her we should part ways. She said that was fine, she'd be waiting at home if I needed her.
So, feeling rather abashed, I turned to Aela to ask her to follow me and she blew up. Shouted something about "how can there be words between us" after what had happened. I still don't know what I did to prompt such an outburst. Thankfully I could say, "Wait, wait! It was all a misunderstanding! Can't we start over?" She acquiesced, but warned me to watch myself in the future. This time I wasn't going to say or do anything until I fixed things with the priest.
As I hastened out of there, I paused to take my bearings, and heard footsteps behind me, and there was Aela, peering side-wise at me. I didn't dare say anything, and she came to Riften with me. A day later, there we were in the temple exchanging vows. Even Lydia came, and had some nice things to say. Indeed, I was a bit surprised to find Lydia at Breezehome when we got back, but she's looking after the place now that Aela and I have moved to Markath.
Aela notices things
I don't recall where we were, but we'd just dealt with a batch of highway bandits and I was recovering Dwarven arrows, which at the time were quite valuable to me, when Aela said, "You don't see that everyday." I turned and she was gazing at a remarkable vista. I had to laugh at that, seeming so incongruous after a fight. Now I've come to expect it, as well as her timely warnings of trouble ahead.
Aela and crabs
From time to time we've had to ford streams or even swim, and more often than not as I enter the water I will hear her exclaim something like, "I am going to kill you!" Oh, look, she saw mud-crab! And those sea-lions? I can walk right by the beasts but she always starts a fight with them.
We've settled down to a pretty good working and even domestic relationship. Still, I have to wonder where she's keeping all that gold I give her for archery lessons...
