Advice on buying a sound system.

Post » Thu Dec 01, 2011 5:45 pm

Hey guys. I'm thinking of buying some sort of sound system for my bedroom, but I'm not really sure where to start. By sound system I mean speakers that will give a good sound quality and not just restrict it to my headphones. This is about as much as I know though... so really what I'm asking is what do I buy? My budget isn't huge as I'm only a student, but I figured someone here should no what they're talking about so it was worth a shot

If anyone needs any more information as what would be best for me please do ask, as I'm currently at a loss. Thanks in advance.

I'd just buy something used. I use some old speakers and a Sony... thing that I found in my dads house a long time ago.

Are you just looking for speakers for the computer, or a surround sound system for television/music? Although, you can do that on the computer too. I have a Pioneer system that I connected my, well, everything into, including my pc. I remember it only cost around $200 I think. Great sound.

I agree with Simpson on this.

The thing I use has Pioneer speakers and a Sony "Audio/Video Control Center" that I have hooked literally everything into. My dad was given the thing on the cheap years and years ago because it was broken. It still is broken, but I managed to get it to work.

So you mean it's just the one speaker you have? Or is it more of a surround sound? Sorry if I don't really seem informed but this isn't my area of expertise.

Nah. It's two speakers, you just can't see the other one in that shot. My point is that what I use has to be at least 20 years old and it works better then any other speaker system I've had to date.

I'd say that you should go on Ebay and look for an old audio system and some good speakers. Would be much cheaper then buying anything new.

True. Garage sales sometimes will have receivers and speakers as well.

Ok, that would probably be a good move for me, I doubt I could afford anything new. But what specific bits would I be looking for. My dad's setup is so complicated, I wouldn't even know where to start.

It depends on what you want. If you just want the basic two-speaker setup then all you'll need is the receiver, speaker wire, cables to actually connect your stuff with, and the actual speakers.

Actually that's pretty much all you'd ever need anyway. Plus a few more extra speakers.

Well is it worth paying more and getting a 5.1 setup or something more?

For me it wouldn't be. I don't find the need to string wires everywhere when what I have works fine.

I'm curious too. And you can always get more speakers later if you decide to. I think most receivers now have setups for 5.1.

When it comes to sound systems, (anything having to do with sound really) cheap is not ALWAYS the best. My parents have been screwed over many times with cheap sound systems, and they still haven't gotten the hint. If it is cheap, then look around at many different reviews from different sites. Compare them, and see if it is worth it. If it is cheap, and not a lot of people have had a problem with it, then get it. However, spending a little more money can save you more money later. You will save money that you'd be spending either on repairs or a whole new system.

That's why I suggest getting as good quality, but older, system instead of a new one. It'll still very likely be cheaper, but only because it's used.

Well this is what I'm trying to decide. I'd rather have nothing now but save my money for a later date, than spend it on something that isn't worth buying. I think my dad is fairly confident with this kind of thing, and of course I'll check around the internet before buying anything first, so I should manage.

very true. As long as it is not refurbished. I really don't like refurbished stuff. They say it is fixed... they are lying...
