After all this time I just discovered...

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 6:47 pm

That you can actually look at every object found in meticulous detail in your inventory. I knew you could look at it, but I didn`t know you could rotate it and roll it around!

Now while I would normally call this a gimmick, i actually find it very realistic as you can look at any object in real life and roll it about.

So nice touch.

The 3D map is a needless gimmick but not this.

Now I`m going to look at anything I find in close up!

You have to do this to solve a few puzzles in the game.

That's interesting, I'll definitely try that out. It would be useful for those dragon claws especially.

Its a pity the game doesn't have a vanity screen for your player in the menu system when you try on armors and stuff. That is one thing I miss from Oblivion.

I love being able to do this in games. You can do it in Resident Evil, which I was playing recently. It does seem a small thing but I really like being able to examine all my shizz.

If you just click zoom in on the claws you can tell what the puzzle answer is. I also took a little time to realise I could rotate the items. :P Maybe I was just lucky that the claws were facing me in my inventory?

Good question.

I knew you could look at the object. So I just looked really hard at the claw and I could just see the line up of the creatures. That`s how I did it. Didn`t know I could roll it around for a better view and all that!

lol, wow, I discovered the zoom function for that reason, I couldn't see them and in the dungeon there was this journal that said "the answer is in the claw".

Yeah, that's what happened for me too - the claw was oriented in such a way I just had a hard time making out the symbols, so I tried using the mousewheel to zoom, and it worked. I also figured out once it zoomed I could rotate, which was also helpful.

Still, my one disappointment with this game is that the tutorial was so spartan. I played for like 10 hours before figuring out there is a sprint option (I guess I should have checked the controls sooner; most games I check the controls menu out to see what's available - definitely a good idea with most games). But, the controls window won't generally give you any indication you can do something like zooming the items in the inventory screen, so having that in the tutorial might have been nice.

This observation is yet another poignant reminder of the general uselessness and overall poor design of the SR UI.

The loss of such a large amount of screen real-estate for admiring minor details is a complete waste of UI space. Particularly since it could have been done just as easily with the addition of an item inspect screen.

That's what i did until I found it out too lol, when I was solving puzzles like that I remember thinking to myself "this can't be right, could they really have designed the game like this?!" I was happy when i found out that wasn't the case.

Well, we almost made it to 10 posts before someone managed to take a really cool feature and make some arbitrary complaint about a UI that plenty of people like just fine.

This feature was shown in any demonstration of skyrim prior to release. You must have had an iron will for not watching any videos. Or poor observation skills.

Ahh, that must be the reason why SkyUi is one of the most popular mods out there.

if you didn't knew that you can rotate items, did you open puzzledoors only through trying all the time?

I enjoy studying some of the inventory items too. As you improve armor, like the elven armor, you can see the detail on the helmet better.

Heh.... Surely you jest.

If there are such things as classes for designing game UIs, SR would be held up as a screaming example of what not to do.

Personally i don't like watching pre-release videos or playing beta's, something normally gets spoiled.

Though I like the rotating of the items, etc, I have to agree the UI left a lot to be desired. However, I guess it really isn't that absolute worst. I get your frustration though.

Lucky you. I knew about the zoom feature but I didn't learn about the puzzle answers on the claws for a month. Until then I used the order of elimination. Example: Bear bear bear. Fail. Bear bear dragon. Fail. Bear bear wolf. Good god it took me sooo long.

I really wish that people on this forum would realize that the vast majority of players never watched the gameplay trailers and never went on the forums. Some people just play games.

Yes, it's a neat feature. Functional and eye candy at the same time.
Good job Beth.

As for the map and compass it'd be nice if you'd have to actually hold them in your hands to get guidance. That way you'd have to choose between finding your way around and wielding a weapon.

Just a thought.

Yes, I rotate and zoom every weapon too.

I have to disagree about the 3D map tho, I've found it very useful to kind of hover a little more directly over a location, when I'm trying to figure out the best way over a range etc.

i always loved looking at objects. this was first time that inspecting one led me to solving one of the puzzles (i know the puzzles in Skyrim aren't that hard, but i'm not really a puzzle guy, so any help is great) but the sequence of characters was on the back of some strange trinket. it was a cool moment.

do miss having my character visible in the inventory screen ala Oblivion.
