After a few days of playing NV it started lagging a lot

Right, the problem that I'm having is that I've played through the game and started now going trough the side quest and stuff and a few other new games for different styles of play. But a few days ago I loaded up New Vegas and it was just jumping every time I moved or talked to someone, my inital reaction to this was to turn my graphics down, despite the computer being able to cope with it before, but that seemed to make no difference. So then I thought that maybe it might be something wrong with my laptop so I ran another game on it and it was working fine. So now I decide it's time to search the forums and see if other people are having the same problems. Now as far as I understand people are having stuttering problems that can be fixed with a mod, but they seem to have had the problem until they used the mod. So what I'm not understanding here is why the game suddenly decided to jump every time I do something, when before it was working fine. I can't recall anything that I might have done to cause the game to do this either so I don't know why it's happening and am hoping tat someone could enlighten me as to why it is and maybe, if they are feeling kind enough, help me to sort out the problem. Also I'd prefer not to use mods if possible, but if it's really needed I'll try them.

Thanks for your help,
Ankashamana

Welcome to Fallout. Both Fallout 3 and New Vegas did the exact same thing for me. The more stuff you acquire, the more perks you get, the more quests you complete, the more the games starts bugging and running terribly. That's just part of it I guess. I'm also playing on a laptop. But, this laptop is no slouch. It plays most other PC games at max settings at 1080p. It also played Fallout 3 and New Vegas at high settings at 720p until I started getting into the game. 100 hours into the game and I've had to dumb down my graphics considerably. I'm hoping that if I had a really high end desktop this wouldn't be a problem as I hope to get one soon. All i can tell you is to kelp turning those graphics down or buy it for a console. Preferably the 360 since it appears to be getting exclusive DLC.

To prove my point, try starting out a new character and you'll see that it runs fine again. Play 20-30 hours with said character and you'll notice the same slowdown. A small price to pay for such a great game. Sigh

The lag is caused by large save files since it stores things for you, also mass amounts of rounds/ and anything else weightless in your inventory causes this but it needs to be alot of items that are directly linked to your character. Look at your save game files once they start reaching 5 megs or more you start running into issues normally you really start running into the strange issues at 7megs plus. The solution get into game and start selling/destorying/jury rigging items.

Yeah my latest save file is 8.50MB. I guess I need to get rid of some of the needless stuff I store in my Lucky 38 Suite? I don't carry a whole lot of stuff. I do have several thousands rounds of certain types of ammo although none of them exceeds 5000 except for 5mm and electron charge packs. I've also got a couple hundred thousand caps. Does a crap load of caps count? I'm about to do a serious clean out of my 38 Suite I guess. Anything not unique is going to be sold.

Pretty much=/ alot of things play major factors into this too bad there was not a way to add a mod, put things into it, then remove it and the items would not show up until you reloaded the mod, that would take care of the bloated database issues....

Right, so basicly I need to get rid of all of the junk that I carry round with me? And does just having one game with a save file that is over 5MB make this happen to all other saves or does it just effect the one save as this is happening to all my games even ones with save files of less than 5MB and I was wondering if it was something else causing this because for just one save that's above 5MB seems strange to me and there's that fact that this actually happened overnight as in it worked fine for one day, having fun playing the game running nice and smoothly, then I wake up the next day and boom it's just going really jumpy and stuff.
