After I finish Skyrim

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 5:13 pm

I loved Oblivion and love Skyrim even more. I'm only level 11 but already I feel this could become the greatest game I've ever played (currently Ocarina of Time).

When I've finished it what would people recommend as another similar game to play? I have Fallout 3 GOTY edition on the PC but for some reason I could never get into it. (maybe it starts too slow and I need to give it a chance).

How does Morrowind compare to Skyrim and Oblivion? What about others like The Witcher 1 and 2?

I recommend morrowind with graphical mods. It's awesome game but the combat may turn you off of it. However it's almost as good as skyrim as far as exploration goes. Also the no voice acting can be a turn off as well. If you can look past those two faults, you will absolutely love morrowind.

There is a game coming in the Spring of 2012 called Kingdoms of Amalur - it has a lot for former Oblivion and other open-world RPG members on its team. Can't guarantee it will be good - but I think it has a lot of potential.

Did you try Fallout New Vegas? It is head and shoulders above Fallout 3 in my opinion.

Morrowind has a very poor combat system, something which has yet to be improved upon by modders. Providing that doesn't bug you too much, you should enjoy it, as it is the best game of the series.

It looks like a Fable clone, and not a very good one.

Mount and Blade: Warband is a very good first-person RPG.

Good suggestion. A great modding community as well.

Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. Its what I play. :P

edit: Or you could play 4th edition D&D its more newbie friendly. Plus its very fast paced and lets you have a lot of fun. Just a lot of old school D&D players don't like it and give it a bad rep because its too different to the old editions.

Once you finish Skyrim, you play Skyrim.

This, haha.

Give Skyrim a go. I never liked it (even though it was the first Elder Scrolls game I played), but if you can get into it then you'll get a nice play of that.

Daggerfall and Morrowind. Former is free and the biggest in sense of the world. The latter have an awesome amount of lore and isn't the typical medieval like.

Seeing ya play Fallout 3, try out STALKER and Fallout New Vegas as well.

There are so many great RPGs out there (especially if you own a PC), you will be spoilt for choice. As far as exploring an open world goes, nothing really compares to the Elder Scrolls games that I have played, except MMO RPGs. If you prefer a great immersive story though, you can do better than Elder Scrolls, combat wise you can too. Here is some suggestions:

Morrowind is a great game, obviously if you are used to Elder Scrolls games you might like it, I personally find it a little more complex than Oblivion and Skyrim, but thats a good thing not a bad thing. You will be disappointed at the graphics after playing Skyrim and Oblivion, but if you can deal with that you might be in for a good time here.

Dues Ex is one of the greats too. The original was brilliant, an all time favourite of mine, the second one not so much, the third one I haven't tried yet but have heard good things from friends who tried it.

Knights of the Old Republic If you like Star Wars at all and you like RPGs these are too good to miss. I personally prefer the second one, but popular opinion seems to prefer the first. Either way, they are both great games. I would offer a word of warning though, I have heard there are issues running the second one on windows 7, though I haven't tried it since Windows XP so I wouldn't know.

Dragon Age Origins Great game, basically a watered down, simplified Baldurs Gate with better graphics. Superior on the PC to the consoles because it lets you play in a top down strategic view not just 3rd person, which is great for controlling your party in combat. I can't recommend Dragon Age 2 though.

Mass Effect Brilliant first game, not tried the others but have heard they are great too, if ever I manage to scraqe the time and cash together I will try them. A mix of shooter and RPG.

Baldurs Gate 1 & 2 My all time favourites, dated now but if you never played them and you like RPGs don't miss out. I advise looking for Baldurs Gate Tutu mod online, it allows you to play BG1 in the BG2 engine, much better or you are stuck with crummy resolutions. There are also some mods out there that enable playing these games in high resolutions on modern monitors. So, you have to put a bit of work in considering they so old, but if you get them working its worth it. Find them at gog.com

I could recommend a whole bucket load of other great RPGs, but these are some good ones to get you started. Others might include Fallout series (new and old 2d ones), Planescape, Icewind Dale and MMOs like World of Warcraft and the new Star Wars MMO in beta at the moment.

Morrowind hasn't aged very well, but even with relatively few mods (Galsiah's Character Development, MGSO and Tamriel Rebuilt are essential imo) it becomes a much better game than either Oblivion or Skyrim.

The Witcher 1 and 2 are really amazing as well. I think I like the first even better than Morrowind, and the sequel is damn good too. Not the type of game many hardcoe Bethesda fans enjoy though. It's not open world and focuses on story and character development. I second Mount and Blade: Warband as well, though I generally prefer playing that in third person.

And no rpg recommendation thread is complete without at least a dozen votes for VtM - Bloodlines, so there. Possibly my favourite game ever.

I think I'd have to counter the Morrowind suggestions: even with mods, I think it's really showing its age now. I'm not recommending avoiding it as I'd still rate it as one of my favourite games of all time, but I think I'd be inclined to temper some of the unbridled enthusiasm with an "approach with caution."

Edit: apparently you can't make jokes about another country?

Back in 2004 we went a little nuts with the Soviet Russia jokes ("nuts" as in "filled most of Community Discussion"). We, uh, we don't talk about it much.

Anyway, most of the games I'd suggest have already been mentioned, but I'd like to add:
Jade Empire (eastern-flavoured Bioware RPG)
Alpha Protocol (modern-day spy-thriller made by Obsidian, same devs as KotOR 2 and New Vegas. Does a great job of letting the player make his own story through their actions and choices, although not so great in most other aspects)
Gothic series (I've only played 3, which had an amazingly beautiful game world and a decent story, but from what I've heard the first two are just as good/better. Most people say to steer clear of number 4, though)

If you aren't a graphics [censored], Morrowind.

Better dialogue, better land, more lore, better quests, better all-around gameplay really... OB/Skyrim's combat isn't better, people just don't understand how Morrowinds calculated dodge/block system works and are confused by the lack of a "dodge" animation.

The constant swing and a miss wasn't exactly appealing and neither was finding that damn puzzle box. I understand how it works but it can be sort of aggravating at times with the Cliff Racers constantly popping up.

The constant swing and miss never happened when you got leveled up. It was annoying in the beginning of the game, but it made you feel weak - which is how you should have felt.

As for the puzzlebox, I guess things are a little more challenging without a magic compass, huh?

If you thought FO3 had a slow beginning then you won't like Morrowind. It has a beginning that makes you greatly afraid to ever move five feet out of Seyda Neen or Balmora due to the fact that for the first three or four levels you won't be able to hit anything with weapons, and if you could, you probably wouldn't do much damage, so you spend most of the time wandering around cities doing fetch quests and trying to move farther and farther into the wilderness.

Although it's about as popular an opinion as admitting to liking Oblivion and Fallout 3, I loved Gothic 3: really atmospheric and pretty, as well as really being rather interesting in terms of gameplay and its story. I've heard bad things about Gothic 1's user interface, so after my exasperating experience with Skyrim's, I think I'd avoid it on that basis alone. Gothic 4 was... well, not crap, but it felt very uninspired and something about it felt unfinished. I didn't have any real problems with bugs or instability, it just felt half-done somehow, so it's hard to make any recommendation other than "don't bother", sadly.
