After graphics card change FalloutNV.exe crashes

Post » Wed Feb 16, 2011 7:02 pm

Hi all,

I just changed my old graphics card (Asus Geforce 8800GT 512MB) to new one (ASUS ENGTX460 DirectCU TOP/2DI/1GD5). Because the both cards use the same drivers, I expected everything to work just fine after changing the card. I have had the latest drivers on my PC (version 260.99) installed. When I started the Fallout New Vegas game after the card change, it seems to start normally. But when I select to continue the game from the last saved game, the FalloutNV.exe crashes. It crashes, if I try to open any of the saved games.

If it helps, I have Windows 7 (32-bit) and Intel Core2Duo E6850 processor. Before changing the card the games crashed sometimes, but I was able to play the game. Now the game crashes everytime and I can't play the game at all.

So, any idea, what went wrong? Should I install the game again? Will I lose the saved games? Any solutions ideas, tweaks, tips for editing game ini files or something? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Regards,

You needed to re-run the Configuration Utility; what I'm not certain of, however, since I haven't personally made such a change this go-round, is whether you need to rename or erase the INI file(s) that the Configuration Utility generated, before generating a new one (or, if necessary, more than one such).

Need to delete your ini files from \Users\NAME\Documents\My Games\FalloutNV as they are configured for your 8800GT.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick replies! I deleted these three files from the folder: Fallout.ini, FalloutPrefs.ini and RendererInfo.txt, but it didn't help. The RendererInfo.txt looks ok to me. Any other ideas?

Do a CLean reinstall of your video card drivers. During the installation wizard you can select a checkbox indicating a clean install. This will uninstall your current drivers and reboot your machine.
Then it will install the new ones. Make sure you run the driver install app "as admin" by right clicking.

Hi again,

Thanks jasper1979, that helped! I reinstalled the drivers and now the game seems to work! There were still some other issues (characted faces were not drawn properly, game crash when exiting, etc.), but at least I can play now!

Somehow it seemed, that the ini files were ok. I'm not sure, if the game or steam updated them after the graphics card change. Strange thing here is, that Windows 7 updated the drivers to the latest version after I started my PC after the card change... Any way, I'm happy the game works again! :)
