Hi everyone.

Since yesterday I encounter real issues trying to play Skyrim. The game doesn't work properly more than some seconds or sometimes a few minutes, and it invariably end by crashing my computer, forcing it to reboot.

I've played for more than 200 hours without any major issue, except maybe 4 or 5 CTD.

I didn't change anything in my computer, no new hardware, no new software.

From the beginning I play with some minor tweaks that I have never changed since :

bTreesReceiveShadows=1
bDrawLandShadows=1

I have always let steam patch the game, even if I've not played when it was 1.2 ; I have however played many hours with 1.3 and 1.31 without any major problem, without any crash or reboot.

The drivers of my video card (nvidia GeForce 570 GTX) were up-to-date, but when I encountered the first crash and reboot yesterday I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. Nothing has changed. I uninstalled it again and installed the 290.53 beta drivers, and it made no difference either.

I uninstalled the game and reinstalled it, and I let the program decide itself of the graphic options, I created a new game without any tweak, but just after the character creation the problem occured again.

My other games (Team Fortress 2, Deus Ex : Human Revolution, ... ) run fine, without any problem.

I really don't understand what's wrong, and I come to you to try to understand and, maybe, to find a solution to my problem ...

Anyone else encountered a similar issue ?

Thank you in advance and sorry for my english, I'm from Belgium and I just learned it by myself, so ...

:-)

Probably a corrupted save. Try an earlier one.

I think you didn't really read my original post ...

;-)

I did a fresh new install of the game, without any old save. Then I created a new game and the problem occured again just after the character creation.

And yes, before doing this, I even tried an old save (from 11/12/2011 with 60 hours less of playtime) and it made no difference either

Can you post your DXdiag? Seems weird that a fresh reinstall would carry over this problem.

Just a guess here...

Hmm lets see, 200+ hours of Gaming, a heavy duty load to say the least. could be a marginal Part is starting to Fail?.
Have you opened the case and cleaned ?

Wierd that it worked , then just started , without any change to the EXE or system. And you say it stayed with you even thru a reinstall of Drivers and the Game, including starting a new Game...

Again could be nothing more then a Driver getting corrupt. OR even Windows for that matter. A Virus?

Try checking each and every driver you have..sound, motherboard, GPU.
How old is your PS(power supply), they slowly lose power over time.
Post as much info as you can on System and Drivers.

Edit: you posted the DXdiag while i was typing...nice TY

32 bit OS = 3.5 Gig Ram ......Not the 4 you installed.

Even with the New EXE giving US, (those with x64) LAA. That is not helping you. And this is just manifesting itself more and more.

If your other games work OK then it's probably just the game itself or something Windows based, like registry.

My case seems clean, I will check it again.

Indeed ... I'm completly lost with it.

Again could be nothing more then a Driver getting corrupt. OR even Windows for that matter. A Virus?

I will check it with my antivirus. I dont't think that my video drivers are involved, as I played many hours with the same one before it happens. Installing the new beta version made no difference.

Try checking each and every driver you have..sound, motherboard, GPU.

My power supply is 6-7 months old, same for my graphic card.

That's what I think too, but my knowledge about computers is limited, but it seems logical ...

I will try to use CCleaner for my registry. Never did it before ...

I just tried to launch the game again ... It crashed and rebooted my PC while I was still on the main menu ...

I checked my problems reports and here is what happens :

Someone can tell me what it could mean ?

The 60 problems seem to be the same, involving sysdata. xml and WERInternalMetadata.xml ...

Hi,

Can you please send me that .dmp file in a mail and I can check what the problem is for you. I have the Windows debug tools installed.

Just send me a pm and I'll give you my email address.

Very weird problem if only with Skyrim and persisting with a fresh install.

Check your event viewer to see if it logged the crash. I get occasional TDR crashes in Skyrim, and when gaming in general, myself.

I assume you go through the appropriate steps when installing video card drivers: namely making sure windows auto-update, firewall and any virus guards are shut down. Uninstall old drivers and delete all folders. Boot in safe-mode and clean out old driver keys from the registry, then boot in normal mode and make sure only the standard vga graphics adapter is installed then do a clean install of the new drivers.

Beyond that I would try downclocking your GPU, CPU or reinstalling your OS to see if any of that helps at all.

My other games (Team Fortress 2, Deus Ex : Human Revolution, ... ) run fine, without any problem.

This is a tough one cause it could be nearly anything. However, I would try some other more taxing games than those two games. Something that uses DX11 heavily and is known to use a lot of memory. Maybe Arkham City in DX11 mode, or Crysis 2 with the high rez textures and DX11. Play it for a while, let it run for a couple of hours at least to see if your system is stable. Pretty much what you want to do is eliminate it being a hardware problem.

If you have access to spare RAM, I would swap them out and try to eliminate the memory being an issue. If you have 16 GB ram, try running it with 8, etc.
Also, even though your power supply is only 6 months old, it doesn't completely rule it out. If you're using a cheap power supply, it could easily be a problem. What is the brand and how much power? Maybe buy a new one and return it if it's not the problem. I recommend a gold-rated Seasonic or Corsair.

Hi ! Sorry, I can't find the concerned file anymore. I don't know where it is on my hard disk and a research give me no result ...

Yes, I'will start by trying to play Arkham City in DX11 mode a while and see what happens. But I already finished the game some days ago, so I'll be surprised if something wrong happens ...

Thank you for your advices !

You can look in c:\windows\minidump\ or similar. Windows should create a dump folder somewhere and it should not be removed unless you manually delete it.

googled your error...did find this as interesting...didn't know this was in win 7
type in the search bar "reliability" and "View reliability history" should come up, take a look and when you see the crashes, see if during all the crashes it says "A problem with your video hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly."

I just did that, and ok thats a lot of info stored...mine goes back a year and you can tell what crashes & when, I was a solid 9 back 2 month ago..some Opera crashes and some Skyrim ones and now its a 2...

Have a look see if anything sticks out?

Thank you for this.

Here is my reliability history for the 29/11/2011, the first day I encountered those crash and reboot issues :

And here are the two problems related to Skyrim in this history :

I cant read most of that...i googled some of what i could read...is this a case of Access violation.?

I am noticing you have steam in the UAC protected directory. "Program Files" is not a good place for steam and the game. Best to google, moving steam out of the UAC protected folder.

I moved my steam to .....c:\Games\

Have you looked for the mini dump file so Thornor could have a look. I checked that folder for me and its empty, checking in "advanced System" and indeed the "Dump" is turned off for me. So if you don't have any mini dumps, check and turn it on.

I finally founded where are my .DMP files, but the problem has evolved now, as I encounter similar issues to run Dark Messiah ... I can't go further than the main menu and my computer crash and reboot just like it does with Skyrim.

I don't know why it doesn't when I played to TF2 thursday for more than one hour and when I played to DE:HR for half an hour.

I however suspect a problem with my power supply, as I remember having similar issues some months ago while trying to play any "3D" games. I'm just a bit surprised this time that it doesn't cause problem with every game like it does before.

This time it began mainly with Skyrim, and that's why I suspected the game in the first place to be the cause of the problem, but I'm really not sure of this anymore.

So I will bring my PC to my usual store, because my lack of knowledge about computers doesn't let me even try to fix it by myself.

@Thornar : I finally founded my .DMP files. Thank you for your proposition but I will ask to the people of my store to fix the problem, like I said above.

Thank you all for trying to help me !

I wish you best wishes for 2012 !
