After playing Skyrim so much...

I dare you to go play Oblivion. I did this and it felt like a completely different game. It also made me realize one thing Oblivion had over Skyrim was so many vibrant colors. Start from the tutorial and exit the sewers. I'll be waiting for a response on your feelings about it.

I didn't like all those colors to be honest. Made everything seem artificial.

I understand this, but Skyrim just seems kind of dull and depressing in the color department...there's no perfect balance between the two.

Well if you're on the PC there is mods that can fix that.

I agree that Skyrim and Oblivion are very different, and personally I think Oblivion was better. Skyrim's awesome, don't get me wrong, but Oblivion was my first Elder Scrolls game, so Skyrim just doesn't give me the same sense of awe that I got from playing Oblivion for the very first time. I don't think the colors really have anything to do with it, the colors of both games fit very well with the individul moods of each game in my opinion.

Yeah, this about sums up my first five minutes in each game I've played:

Morrowind: "AH! I'm on a boat! DUDE, THAT GUY IS TALKING TO ME! DUUUUUUUUDE, I GET TO PICK WHAT MY CHARACTER LOOKS LIKE! I get to answer questions to decide what my class will be, but I can also pick for myself? AWESOME! A room full of stuff, and I can grab ALL the stuff? I'm gonna use all this! BUT I CAN SELL IT?! WHOA! What's that, in the opposite direction of where I'm supposed to go? WHOA! HOW AM I GOING THAT WAY!? THIS IS SO AWESOME!!!!!!"

Oblivion: "Hey, some old guy that was dreaming about me. Stalker. Alright, so I'm following these guys through these ruins and- GOBLINS?! I guess that's kinda cliche, but no big deal. The graphics are better than Morrowind, and I could customize my character more, so that's pretty cool. Oh hey, I'm out of the sewers now an- AH, GOD! THE COLORS! MY EYES! IT BURNS US!!!!!"

Skyrim: "AH [censored]! I'm on a carriage! [censored] JUST GOT REAL! Some guys are talking? You stole a horse? PLEASE! I stole a spoon. So, what race am I going to be? They all look better, have better models, look bad-ass, and aren't wooden masks...... Uuuuuhhhh... Bosmer, I guess. Sweet. Oh, they're going to execute me? Damn, I was two days from retirement. I guess that's a pretty nice career for somebody in Tamr- AH [censored]! A DRAGON! HOLY [censored]! Them guys just got roasted! WHOA! That dragon just picked that guy up and threw him! DAYUM, DRAGON, YOU SCARY! That dragon come in MY yard, I kill it."

I'm one of those who perhaps will never go back to Oblivion(unless there's a new amazing novelty) I tried my best to love Oblivion; downloaded tons of mods and even though I had moments of admiration, it failed to capture my interest as Morrowind did. I've uninstalled Oblivion from my HD to make room for Skyrim mods. I still have Morrowind installed though.

I think the problem lies in seeing the same thing over and over again.

Morrowind was amazing because it was fresh. You could free-roam a mystical world, cast spells, fight monsters, and it was HUGE. When Oblivion came out, it felt like the same thing scaled down, with better graphics and animations.

Now that I've played Skyrim over 100 hours in, I feel like I am just bored with the idea behind the game. Fallout 3, for example, was an amazing representation of a post-apocalyptic world, something I'd never seen before. Exploring the land, weapons, and means of survival (towns) felt very new and authentic. Skyrim just feels like a very tweaked Oblivion, with obviously better everything.

I'll tell you what I would really enjoy, something not fantasy or post-apocalyptic themed: Space, future Earth, or maybe an Earth after a zombie uprising kind of RPG? I'm not sure, but something I haven't played before.

this oblivion made me a pro in skyrim the first few days it came out my friends were like we have to find a pro who plays skyrim I'm like right here! there like no no then were talking in one of our classes and someone says what are daedric hearts for? I say crafting daedric armor and weapons with ebony ingots. he says how so you know? I say I read a book in oblivion about it. they say a book from oblivion isn't going to have anything to do with skyrim! 2 days later you were right......

Im in a sligtly diff camp from all of you.

i didnt play morrowind until it was already old, i admired the storys in it, liked the variety, but the graphics and gameplay just killed it for me, probaly cuz the first ting i did was take a sword and found a mudcrab...i turned the game off an hour later as for me to enjoy a game i need good gameplay, if i want good story i like to have it in a game, but if its all it has id rather go read a book. a number of months later i tried again with a plethora of suggested mods, still couldnt do it, i like some of hte mechanics, but again the raphics and gameplay of melee combat just killed it for me.

Oblivion i played closer to when it came out, impressive graphics, slightly better melee, it could at least be satisfying at times. world felt smaller tho. again, the gameplay wore thin and i gave up. I tried again with mods a year later, was interesting, but again....not impressive. probably didnt help either the first char i made was a sneak based archer...which was woefully UP in vanilla oblivion.

skyrim, played it and yes, very nice graphics, the mountains with the clouds and such are particularly beautiful. the combat is even better meleewise tho i found it lacking spellwise with such fewer options in spells. the world felt bigger then oblivion. Im still having fun in it but i can tell already the gameplay is thinning again, there is just very little depth in the combat which makes up so much of the games time. and the other things like dialogue and crafting are rather shallow compared to other games as well, so whiole i could do a lot of stuff, none of it is very satisfying.

Im gonna try at it again sometime after the CK comes out and a ton of gameplay altering mods come out.

I LOVE the concept of open world, played the fallout games a lot. graphics arent endall beall for me as i love the old fallout games and the things like planescape torment, but i need something more then a fantasy simulator to keep me interested. probably why i liked nyrhim or watever it was called for oblivion. its sad, cuz as good a concept TES series is, i find it falls short every time cuz of shallow/poor gameplay mecanics.

I havent played vanilla Oblivion since 2007 and I dont want to. Dont want to even think about it. If I wanted to list some things better from Oblivion colours wouldnt be the first though. It seriously lacked depth but still had much more of it than Skyrim. What I miss most from Oblivion are things like attributes, spell creation, spell variety, longer guild storylines (still too short though) etc

I wouldnt want to play vanilla Skyrim anymore either though. Oh how I love mods.

My reaction to them was
This order by the way.
Oblivion: God he's ugly, OMG I'm hideous, cool I can "grow" my hair (30mins later in the creation screen). god my neighbour is a complete dike in these cells can't wait to kill him (which I could actually do the character didn't cease to exist in that pocket of space) oh cool who are these guys, oh feck it's the prison guards again I better hide....out wow so bright, whats that ruin over there...oh a crab is trying to kill me...whats that humming oh it's a plant, oh a quest...oh look a guy with my name and he's offering me something special...oh he meant lockpicks I thought...ah well :(....wow this city is huge, cool look at all those people interacting, oh someones talking to me.

Morrowind, cool a boat, oh I'm being pardoned, I guess laws got more scrict, jeez lousie do these people ever shut up, they can't be brief and drone on and on and on and on, eh characters probally look a bit better mind you but this ui is so fricken hideous I like the map though nice touch having the whole thing being "discovered", oh a big flea, damn to broke to ride it, well lets go walking...wait where on nirn am I going, what did that guy say now? I think i switched off, wow big place kinda empty feeling.

Skyrim. Epic song that is Ill listen to this a while, Cool opening, oh look at that woman returning with gatherings, hey imperial try listening a moment, wheres this Thalmor and actually whats a thalmor, some kinda of rank in the army maybe? Oh grumpy dad let your son watch the show, who am I? Well I feel pretty oh so pretty...but bloody dirty...hey thats no fair Im not on the list can't wait to kill you (no idea still if I did get my revenge or not but even if one was her...meh) well thanks for trying hadvar...not but I guess it was more then anyone else, even Ralof who refused to say we weren't with him...poor lokir I'll inform your family (oh wait he never existed)...use voice to murder? what's this guy been taking I want some....hey moronic scout that thing clearly just landed and isn't up in the clouds. Hey where'd hadvar did he just change six? Outside wow pretty dense place this is, petals and stuff seem dull and it's damn hard to tell ingredients from anything else...sort of good in one way but sort of bad too. Wait if he wants to split up why is this guy still talking to me and pausing for me now and then..

Even if I play it now, oblivion is still the better game for this patches and DLC won't fix, pointed out a few points of immersive details that skyrim outright drops even in the very start which you'd think the bar would be higher. If oblivion was made with skyrims quality and attention to detail the emporers body would vanish not be guarded for the rest of the crisis.

I feel like Skyrim and Nehrim had quite a bit in common (smithing, bards, more voice acting, handcrafted world, etc). Though it may be because they both implemented responses to criticisms of Oblivion.
