Down the hill from Winterhold, somewhere, I found a dead NPC, probably a mage, in a rude camp, with a bear trap, baited with a dead skeever. He had some cool alchemy ingredients lying around, and maybe a level-up book for alchemy.

I died before saving. I've been back several times, but can't find it. Please help me find this place again.

Ironically, while looking around in that area, I found another abandoned camp, with some kind of a shrine, and an alchemy level-up book. But that isn't the one.

Random encounter, it's random, unless your save was recent. By the sounds of it the save wasn't.

One of the wikis mentions a guy in a camp with a baited bear trap in this area. But maybe that was someone else's random encounter. Now I can't find that reference either.

One of the wikis mentions something about an alchemy level up book under the bridge that connects college of winterhold with windhelm. I think that might be the same NPC.

Maybe someone else will think of something.

There's plenty of alchemy skill books out there, of the top of my head: anises shack (near riverwood) and the alchemy shop in whiterun.

You're right of course. I'm just frustrated now. The more I look for this place and fail to find it, the more I want to find it. It's not important.
