EDIT: Make sure you rest before making poisons/potions so you can get additional experience. Alchemy is slow to level, you may want to save some septims for alchemy training. There are various trainers in the world.
The more expensive the potion you're brewing, the more it increases your alchemy skill (and the more dough you get if you sell it, of course).
Here is a list of the most expensive potions:

Buy any giant's toe you find.
Thanks! I guess I'll just have to find ingredients to make those pretty powerful potions.
The more expensive the potion faster it levels. Uesp has a potion list that is really healpful. Other then that, buy all the rare and some not so rare ingredients you can. In my experience it takes a while to level no matter what. But you can make some really powerful poisons, alot more powerful then you can find anywhere.
Yeah I never really thought about making any potions, as I just bought the ones found in stores which weren't really
that strong. I need to level my guy up anyway, a lot of his skills are still around the mid 20's. As I want him to get to Level 81 he needs to be an all-rounder, so alchemy would be a good skill to start in.
