*ALERT* FormID Displacement Errors Introduced By The v1.4 Pa

Post » Thu Jul 07, 2011 10:11 am

As with the last patch, new Forms and Refs were added tothe FalloutNV.esm by the patch, and it has displaced FormIDs and are now causing bad references in modules made with previous versions of the FalloutNV.esm. This is the topic to compile a list of mods afflicted by this problem.

To search for errors, you will need FNVEdit. Load all your active modules (which is its default load selection). If it fails to load all of them, then you need to sort out your module mastery issues. Once you're all loaded, select all modules (just ctrl-A), and then deselect FalloutNV.esm, and all your DLCs (preorder DLCs are small enough not to bother with deselecting, but the big ones are not small enough). Once you have them loaded, right-click and select "check for errors". Now, this will spit out all sorts of errors into the Message tab, so you'll have to sift through to find the ones that indicate a FormID displacement error.

Here's an example of what you're looking for:

Checking for Errors in [3B] Playing With Firepower - New Vegas.esp...[00:10] RCIL - Effect -> Found a ACTI reference, expected: AMEF[00:10] Above errors were found in :Ammo Effects[00:10] Above errors were found in :a0aSECLreflect4 "Energy Cell-L, Reflec Mk4" [AMMO:3B010218][00:10] Above errors were found in :GRUP Top "AMMO"

It found an error where a reference field was expecting an AMEF form type (AMEF = Ammo Effect), but found an ACTI form type instead (ACTI = Activator, a type of interactable world object). What would happen in-game could result in it simply not working, or it could result in game crashiness, depending on the whim of the game engine.

It will also turn up a lot of other stuff, mainly stuff pertaining to flags and whatnot. You want to focus on "Found a (ABCD) reference, expected: (WXYZ)", where (ABCD) and (WXYZ) are the form types. In the event of such an error in a leveled list (LVLI, LVLC, LVLN), then it could have a huge list of expected form types, like this example:

[00:12]             Reference -> Found a REFR reference, expected: ALCH,AMMO,ARMO,BOOK,CCRD,CHIP,CMNY,IMOD,KEYM,LVLI,MISC,NOTE,WEAP

PLAYING WITH FIREPOWER by TheTalkieToaster
Playing With Firepower now has several Ammo Effects now improperly pointing to Activator forms.

Since these are just out of my own personal load order, others may exist. If you decide to sift through your own mod load for FormID displacement errors, please paste the error reports in the manner I have here, within Code and Spoiler tags to keep the post length down, so I can add them to the list.

Man, did Fallout 3 have this many issues with each patch? I joined the community, like, AS the last patch came out, so I didn't see any of this.

I don't believe so. That being said, fo3 had other serious problems with patches. The whole converting all esps to esms using master-override was spawned from a lousy fo3 patch.

Perhaps they're trimming some of the cruft out of the .esm then whatever publishing tool they have reorders the forms to fill in the gaps that leaves? The esm has so much Fallout 3 content in it'd be hard to spot what was dropped, after all.

Hmm, not sure what to think about the consoles getting that patch first. It might be good in that they are taking extra time to tweak it? Or is it bad that either this company or valve managed to delay the patch longer then a bloody console company?

From the sound of things with the patch, new Form and Ref Objects are being added to the ESM. Last time this happened, there were more than a few FormID Mixups.

Those who know what they're doing with FNVEdit can use that app to find any errors with improper FormIDs.

Looks as if the patch is downloading on my machine now. 1.4.0.525

Realistic Wildlife.esp
NewVegasBountiesII.esp
NVR-NPCs.esp
NVR_rePopulated Wasteland_Patch.esp
NVR-Version_10.esp
Courier.esp

I started the game after downloading, and though NVSE wasn't working (obviously), there were know immediately obvious problems with my current load order. In fact, it all seemed much smoother. I didn't take much time to explore possible mishaps though, but what I am saying is it might not necessarily be a massive disaster.

From what I've heard, that's not enough. You'll need the icon and launcher EXE too.

Alright, I'm turning this topic into a place to compile a list of any FormID Displacement Errors introduced by this patch. Instructions to hunt for such errors if you have working knowledge of FNVEdit are provided in the OP, and a mod will hopefully come around to change the topic title.
