Allies fighting dragons

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 2:48 am

I love Giants. I've had three dragon encounters now in which Giants helped me slay the dragon, one including a mammoth fighting alongside. It's pretty awesome.

Have you had similair encounters in which the random animals or anybody random has joined in on fighting dragons? Which allies did you like most? Tell me all about it!

I learned a lesson about this: never ever hit a dragon when it is fighting with giants, or they will become hostile. And believe me, they run fast. Why do they become hostile? I have no idea. Maybe it is a bug or a secret natural bound links the giants with the dragons even though they fight. If a dragon attacks me and then goes for some mudcrabs or sabre cats, it's not my problem.

The first time I saw a Giant and a Dragon fighting it was happening a distance away. So, I strolled up closer to get a look. As they exchanged blows, I crept even closer. So, there I was behind the Giant and it was wailing away at the dragon. The Giant won and then it did it's victory dance where it waves it's club over it's head. Then the Giant turned around saw me and knocked me across the valley.

More like a get-out-before-I-make-you-taste-the-surface-of-the-Moon dance.

The first times I was attacked by dragon's and allies helped I was like;

"Stupid people only the Dovahkiin can kill a dragon" :stare:

Then they killed it and I was like;

"Oh, okay" :confused:

I left a fort I'd just cleared, and noticed a dragon fighting two giants. I didn't stick around to see who won ...

My last playthrough was a light armor sneak type, and I was foolish enough to let Dragon Rising happen pretty early, at which point my chances of killing a dragon by myself - or even with a halfway decent melee follower, and believe me I tried and died many times - were almost nil.

Was going across the tundra west of Whiterun to somewhere when I hear the roar and look up and OH CRAP. Had a follower with me but I already knew it was pointless even to try, I thought we were both toast. Literally. Then I realize on the other side of the ridge we're trying to hide under is one of the giant camps. I can see no giants, but two mammoths are milling around. The dragon attacked the camp instead of us. It would drop down to attack and then come up and circle and then drop down again and occasionally I would see or hear one of the mammoths who must have been fighting it but I resisted the urge to go around and take a peak.

Then the dragon dropped down to attack again and just... never came back up. I waited and waited and... nothing. Finally snuck around to have a look and it was just sprawled out dead with two mammoths peacefully grazing around its carcass and looking at me like "What?" Lol.

So I crept in just close enough to get the soul and all its loot and then got the hell out of there. Never did see a giant but it was a camp with one of the big bonfires so he must've been on the other side of it, thank goodness.

I've had giants slay dragons for me. I've also had guards pitch in, and sometimes I'll have one of the companions with me, while en-route to a quest destination.

Whether or not the help is needed, it's nice to mix things up every now and then and do a group battle.

I fought a dragon with one of those three man Thalmor patrols. It was epic.

I once had a great multi-animal battle against a Dragon. The Dragon came down right in the middle of a Giant Camp near Whiterun...two Giants, three Mammoths and a Sabre-Cat happened to be in the vicinity. They immediately all layed into the Dragon and in an instant the Dragon's Health was down to about 50%. The Sabre Cat quickly bought it, and the Dragon took off. As I watched it fly overhead I stupidly turned my back on the Giants, thinking we were all friends and in this together. But then I realised I'd noticed 5 or 6 additional red-markers on my compass. I turned round, just in time to take a Giant's mighty blow right on top of my head.

I reloaded several times, but seemed unable to actually get the Dragon to engage in battle again.

I've had giants slay dragons for me. I've also had guards pitch in, and sometimes I'll have one of the companions with me,

My very first playthrough, I had gotten to the point where I could have some of the Companions for followers, and that faction was pretty much the only thing I'd done besides bits of the MQ. So I asked Vilkas to follow me just to see what it was like (because I'd had Lydia up to that point and hated her). On the road between Whiterun and the Western Watchtower a dragon attacked. All the guards in the area come rushing in, I'm doing what I can, I think it may have been my first dragon since Dragon Rising so I was really flustered and just trying to hang in there as long as possible.

The dragon finally landed and before I even had time to react and get in near it (I was doing mostly melee at the time), it gave a big death flop and that was all she wrote. I look around for Vilkas and don't see him, altho I knew he'd gone into combat mode when the thing first attacked. I stand there and absorb the soul, then walk towards it to collect my loot, wondering if I'm going to find a dead Vilkas somewhere in the vicinity. Suddenly a guard who is standing there turns to me and says,

Spoiler

"Maybe I'm imagining things, but I could swear I just saw a werewolf."

To this day I still don't know if Vilkas turned into a werewolf and went nuts on the dragon in beast form and that's why it died so quick. About the time I realized what the guard had said and the possibility clicked in my head, I turned around and Vilkas ran up from wherever he'd been or gone.

Has anyone ever used Aela, Farkas, or Vilkas as a follower and had them use the Beast Form to fight something? I traveled with Vilkas a lot on that character, even married him, but I never saw him transform with my own eyes. I don't even know if such a thing is possible, if those NPCs have a choice about it or only turn when they're scripted to (like Farkas in Dustman's Cairn).

I had something similar, but the dragon killed one of the two giants, so I used the ritual stone to resurrect it and hid behind a tree ;)

I made that mistake. I was sneaking through a Giant camp when a dragon showed up, so decided that the Giants would be concentrating on the dragon and stood up to help them fight him. One of the Giants attacked me instead. After I reloaded, I ran and watched the fight from behind some rocks.
