Altmer, love them or hate them?

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 11:51 am

To me it appears like many people dislike or even hate the high elves. But personally I think that they are one of the best races to play as, any thoughts.

They're my personal favorite because I think they're the only race that has ever been designed "right," imo.

What I mean is, Altmer is typically the only race that feels unique. While most of the other races get stupid daily powers or very minor conveniences (disease resistance, poison resistance, an element resistance), the Altmer get an incredible benefit and (save for Skyrim) an incredible weakness. They play differently in everything they do, with more offensive capabilities but usually very poor defense.

In Skyrim they lost their incredible weakness (I say this is a mistake) but at least, again, they're the only ones with a significant, constant benefit as their benefit is the equivalent of 5 bonus levels worth of stat points.

I also tend to ignore their arrogance simply because wtf it's just so poorly executed. I can't really explain it, but when I walk by a Thalmor soldier and he gives me some condescending, arrogant speech, I don't hate him and want to kill him, but rather I just think "wow this game is poorly written" and hell I'm almost tempted to like them simply out of defiance of...I feel like the game is trying to pick my enemies FOR me by making the "enemies" so over-the-top evil that I have no choice, and I'm tempted to take their side just in defiance of such a linear decision-making system. If that makes sense. :P

I love everyone because I'm a hippie.
On a serious note, I only dislike the Thalmor. I think man, mer and beastraces should all be treated equally. But my absolute favorite race is bosmer.

edit: even though my main character is an imperial(which is my second favorite race, dunno why.. just like playing one).

I think Altmer would make a good Legacy of Kain rip off when the Vampire Lords come out. If that tells you anything of my opinion of their race.

I don't mind them, just wish they'd stop trying to destroy or dominate Tamriel. We've had two Aldmeri Dominions and the Oblivion Crisis thanks to the Altmer. Give us a break guys.

I'm actually okay with the aldmeri dominion if they're just want to dominate after all Talos did the same. However I don't like that the thalmor wish to unmake the reality.

hate them. ever since oblivion, there was one who used to hang around the waterfront at the imperial city. he said something arrogant to my dunmer (cant remember what) so i waited till no one was lookin and fired a poison arrow in his back...

amazing that i still remember that. thats were the hatred began

I've been playing since Morrowind and most of the High Elves over the course of 3 games I've encountered are pricks. Granted, the non-Thalmor in Skyrim are alright sometimes.

I disliked altmer in Oblivion, because there, they all looked like they had an egg instead of a head... but in Morrowind and Skyrim, they look awesome. I never cared about stat bonuses, because numbers aren't why I play the game. I use altmer when I want to roleplay a snobbish character.

Apart from the Dominion and Thalmor most Altmers are fine with me, I see them mostly as great mages who are both tall and intelligent. They do tend to have that attitude of superiority over people, but not all of them are like that.

There have been Altmer in Skyrim who I like such as Calcelmo and the priest of Arkay in Falkreath.
