Just completed the quest not only does it not show up on my character but it stacks with my dragon scale helmet

Yup. With my first character (which I deleted due to too many quests bugged and unable to complete), I wore both the cowl and the nightingale hood. But ended up getting rid of the cowl. The the character I have now, I plan on getting the top tier nightingale armor and not bothering with anything else.
