PC and cheating

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 1:13 am

I prefer the 360 for a number of reasons, but I think the most compelling reason for me not to get Skyrim on the PC is that fact that I can't stop myself from using the console to cheat. No willpower. :sadvaultboy:

How do PC players do it?

Well, if we do not tell you, we will thus have prevented you from being able to do so.

You may thank us.

well I only use the console if I am either stuck or if I am messing around most likely when I get bored with the game and want to have a actual war between 30 enemies :P

Cheating ruins the game for me, so I don't do it. Simple as that.

(In Bethesda's games) I Usually i use console commands to sample weapons or armors (usually modded) before getting it legitimately. I also may use console commands to kill particularly annoying enemy, but always reload and beat it legitimately afterwards :hehe:

And just now i'm playing Old World Blues, and remebered that i forgot to take Paladin Toaster with me. Rather than load a save from before i started the DLC and lose my progress i used a console command to give me a new one, and on previous character i raised speech skill with console commands to finally see the alternative ending for Dog in Dead Money. I guess that you could call that cheating

I don't console kill every enemy, or use god mode constantly, or give myself best weapons and armor at the start (except for messign around) because that would make playing the game effortless.

Can't cheat in a single player game.

Plus, I've lost count of the amount of times the console has saved me from being stuck in a rock in Morrowind.

If SteamWorks achievements are present, opening the console will probably disable achievements for that character from then on (you can always just reload and not open the console to continue to get them.)

So if you like getting achievements, there's an incentive.

I only buy games that allow me to cheat, but it's not because I'm some sort of filthy cheating scum, its because I have a muscular condition that causes me to have issues with fine motor control. I love gaming, Ive been doing since the Commodore 64 and I aint gonna give it up because I can no longer "keep up". I'd love to make it on my own, but fact is I'm not going to give up because some goblin ran up behind me and beat me to death before I could manage to manipulate my mouse and keyboard in a way that could allow me to react in a timely manner. PC 4 LIFE! VIVA LA CHEATS!!!

Um.... I don't use it? :)

Pretty much the only rare times I've used "god mode" or "kill" console commands are in overly-difficult-and-annoying mod content. Like the dungeon that's chock-full of stupidly high HP monsters that I've already proven I can kill easily, if incredibly slowly. (I'm looking at YOU, Lost Spires!) Or armor & clothing mods that decide to put their nifty new armor at the bottom of a dungeon guarded by several super-powered NPCs.... even when the armor is just base leather/iron stats. (Meanwhile, the armor that's 2x the strength of Glass is just sitting in a box in the IC.)

Once in awhile I've "noclipped" to get our of a geometry problem. Or to see the whole layout of a dungeon maze I've cleared - those "outside" views of some of the ruins are quite interesting.

Mostly I just use "TFC" (toggle free camera) to take interesting screenshots of my character.

I cheated in Oblivion because I found myself gimped half-way through the game by enemies who were the same level as me, but were kicking my butt because I somehow leveled up the wrong skills.

I really hope they dumped that stupid Oblivion system where the whole world levels up with you - even if all you did was level up your jumping skill or your running skill.

I found it funny when my Nephew told me it was to easy too easy cheat on the pc and accused me of cheating all the time....

Then the next sentence he uttered is, if I knew of any cheats for some PS3 game he plays and how it is hard for him to cheat.

How he only plays violent video games...Which made me laugh on the inside since he wasn't allowed to watch King of The Hill.

You do know there is a way to disable console commands if you don't want to "cheat".

When I was 12 and playing Morrowind I had the same problem. Now I just can't bring myself to cheat, in any game. I'm one of those elitist roleplayers though - countless hours ( and characters ) lost to Dead is Dead Oblivion - so my opinion may be void.

Like others have said, cheating just ruins the game. How long would "god mode" actually be entertaining? Like others have said tcl (lets you walk through walls and fly ... sorta) is great for those moments in Oblivion and Fallout 3 when I have forgotten to save for over an hour and I get pinned in someplace where I should not have been able to get to anyway because I clipped through because of a minor bug or such.

I know this wasnt really directed towards mods. But some people consider mods cheating and think that all mods make the game easier, when in fact some of the most popular mods actually make the game harder.

I'm a complete [censored] for achievements so that is actually a big incentive for me.
When I was younger I cheated all the time in games. I still remember all of the weapon cheats for GTA SA and all of the resource cheats for Age of Empires 1 and 2. As I've matured I realized one thing, cheating makes the game dull. Simple as that, I don't cheat because its more fun not to and there's more satisfaction. The only time I ever use the console in Fallout or Elder Scrolls is when the game won't let me progress because of a bug. I have never used the console to raise my stats, two examples of what I use the console for, both in New Vegas:
Spoiler
1- I brought law to Primm meaning people start exiting the casino. The trader(Johnson Nash) walks to the middle of the street and stops, this is a problem since I can only trade with him if he's in his store. I look on the wiki, find the solution, use the console to kill then resurrect him and he now walks into his store and I can trade with him.

2- There's a huge and intermittent bug that involves companions, weapons and casinos. I left both of my companions outside of a casino, went in and saved a few times, came out and found out that the weapons I had placed in the inventory of one of my companions(Cass) had disappeared. These were weapons(Oh Baby and a fully modded Holorifle) I needed so I used the console to put them back into my inventory.

I only use tcl to get our of places that I couldn't o get out without it, or when I'm bored and want to spawn a lot of bandits/marauders/vampires in the middle of a city and watch them kill each other.

Basically: I don't steadfastly resist. Eventually, I always end up using cheats of some kind, but I keep it under control. It's like eating candy: sure, its not good for me, but it feels nice, and stressing over it isn't good either.
