I'll agree that the dismount animation takes way too long. And then you still have to draw your weapon. All the while they beat on your horse, as if you don't exist. Even after you're finally off it.

It is kind of annoying.

IRL I could fight from horseback without having to dismount, using my horse's speed and manueverablity to my advantage.

Ya it would be good if you could just leap off your horse or be able to draw your weapon on the horse.

This may not be the best of solutions, but for a while I had a dog and he automatically attacked wild beasts, giving me chance to get off the horse.

Happened to me before. Was riding a brand new horse from Windhelm and got off it to kill some wolves. They ended up destroying my horse. Because of this, I always start making the horse gallop faster when something's attacking like that. Shadowmere also helps in these situations because he doesn't die real easily.

Horseback combat DLC - $9.99

I very much doubt we'll ever see mounted combat from Bethesda. At least not for Skyrim. Todd said they didn't include it because it changed the dynamics of combat too much. And we won't be seeing it in the next game, either, unless they decide to overall the combat system. Instead of just tweaking it like they did for Skyrim.

So, we'll have to wait for the modders.

Don't normally sprint with your horse, keep it's stamina ready for when it counts. I'm able to outrun anything (dragons not released), and horse deaths is never an issue as long as I park it a safe distance from any planned action.

It would be cool if you could attack while on horseback but as you can't I never bother with horses, they're pretty useless.

This is why horse combat is needed. NOBODY gets off their horse to fight.

Also it`s actually easier to see things at a distance in 1st person which is how I often avoid creatures ahead of me.

Anyway I don`t use horse (due to forced 3rd person) and run anyway.

In Daggerfall, if you were in a Cart, you were protected from attack. Don't remember about Horses but I think you were attacked while on those. Which is why I used a Cart. I don't know if the horse should make you immune from combat, but somehow less likely to be attacked. Probably the best way is to zoom out with the camera and walk the horse through areas where you think something might be. That way you can see it and dismount in time.

I find the horses a cool feature but they don't work well in some parts of the game, namely combat and conversation. Mounted combat has all kinds of issues. I am sure they tried it, but could not make it work nicely. But even in games where it was offered I did not like it, but that is just me. Cavalry type combat just does not exist in TES Lore, at least from what I have read. So it kind of makes sense that horse mounted combat is not either. Horses are talked about as beasts of burden and travelers, not war horses.

I tend to avoid horses in this game. Every once in a while I will borrow a horse that I am allowed to ride. I look at it as something to do for day off from adventuring.
